Originally featuring members of Some Girls and Dead Ghosts, the Secret Fun Club began as an experimental bass and drum noise group that uses old-tube electronics and modern computer sound manipulation. Drummer Sal Gallegos (Some Girls) co-owns Three One G Records with Justin Pearson, and bassist John Rieder has a long local history as a school teacher. Their song “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” featuring Carrie Gillespie Feller (Hours, Ilya, Hexa) appeared on a Cramps tribute album, Really Bad Music for Really Bad People, which also includes tracks from fellow locals Retox, Qui, and others. The lineup is filled out by Justin Pearson’s buzzsaw band Deaf Club, hardcore group Negative Blast, and Los Angeles no-wave art punkers Guck, featuring current and former members of Gnarwhal, Pile, Designer, Prized Pig, Sprain, and Argentinum Astrum.

Late For Life at House Of Blues
September 20
Late For Life originally formed in Miami, Florida as Switzer in the early 2000s, when the members met during college. They played over 100 shows in 2003, selling out clubs on the east coast and making an appearance on the Vans Warped Tour, becoming known for offbeat covers like Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” and “Raining Blood” by Slayer. Despite the moderate success, they went on hiatus in 2004 and would not make a return for 13 years. After trombonist Neil Schimmenti relocated to San Diego from the east coast, a collection of songs written between 2010 and 2016 was tracked in the spare bedroom at Neil’s house, A Last Waltz for Miami, released in 2017 and featuring several other original members. The downtown event is headlined by Bob Marley tribute group One Drop Redemption.

Trevor Davis at L’Auberge Del Mar
September 22
Growing up, Trevor Davis attended a gospel-style church where he soaked in the soulful music that would come to influence him so much. Starting in junior high, he immersed himself in the punk music scene. In high school, he played bass in a punk band with his best friends, but he had never sung in front of an audience until his senior year, when he decided to sing the national anthem at a basketball game. While learning guitar, he had to play his right-handed Takamine guitar upside down, due to being left handed. He then went on to solo at an open mic night at the Melting Pot in La Jolla and wrote his first song, “Reason Why,” around a year later. He’s been writing and performing steadily ever since.
