Acoustic Evenings at the Athenaeum kicks off a new season with a performance by local rapper Wax, a producer, songwriter, singer, and comedian with millions of Youtube views. From viral videos, he went on to sign a recording contract with Def Jam. An album called Lifetime Achievement Award dropped in October 2024, produced by Kush Mody (producer, composer, and half of pop duo Feed the Biirds). The bill includes Gayle Skidmore and Cindy Lee Berryhill.

Kinnie Dye at Mission Bay Resort

Singer-songwriter Kinnie Dye grew up in Oklahoma, before spending close to a decade in New York City. She launched her first solo cross-country music tour in 2017. After relocating to San Diego, she opened for Jewel and played with her band The Yes Team. She’s known for penning introspective and moody songs such as “Movin’ On” and “My Pretty Mind.” She spends her summers teaching voice lessons, as well as performing at various venues around town.

Benches at Wonderfront Festival

The final day of this year’s three-day Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival will feature local act Benches. After opening for Foster the People and several Louis XIV reunions, their debut full-length was released on Spotify in summer 2019 A new EP called Kill The Lights drops May 23, preceded so far by the release of its title track. Following their Wonderfront appearance and a Music Box gig on June 12, they will be supported by fellow locals Pleasure Pill across the Western U.S., in advance of an appearance at Lollapalooza later in the summer.

Kai Kalama at Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa

Kai Kalama has been singing and performing since the age of 6. He then played guitar and sang with his brother, who he has maintained a duo with since he was 12 years old. He was featured as one of the 36 semi-finalists on Season 8 of American Idol, and was also a winning contestant on the NBC summer game show The Winner Is in 2013. He brings to the stage a one-man show, with a large range of musical styles, from Hawaiian to hip-hop. Kalama has been further developing his rich, soulful voice. He is mastering the art of “live looping” with his use of a loop pedal to create the sound of an entire band. His beach-flavored covers are well suited for Estancia’s shoreline vibe.

Audio Perdisco at the Belly Up Tavern

Oceanside rockers Audio Perdisco features guitar icon Enrique Sotelo, who is gaining a reputation as one of the hottest guitarists in San Diego, drawing comparisons to the Fallbrook Kid, Anthony Cullins. Shortly after forming, they converted a 40 foot school bus into a DIY touring caravan with a fully equipped performance stage on the roof, which became a popular attraction on the local guerilla concert scene. Their music combines elements of indie, rock, hip-hop, and funk. Also appearing will be Mother Gypsy, Persons, and Zen Zag.
