Forget the advice a recent article proclaimed that flooding a neighborhood with bars and restaurants is good for local businesses, creates jobs and promotes social interaction. Peope in Normal Heights are grumbling about the parking problems that the new Heights Tavern is creating on Adams Avenue. Already the Ould Sod is two doors over and Rosie O'Gradys in katycorner at Adams and 34th. And soon the old Lou Jones bar, which has been sold, will be replaced by a new bar right next door to the Heights. The Adams Avenue Business District (BID) thiinks it's got it all figured out. But the grumbling gets louder and louder.
And dont' forget there are two new wine bars on Adams in Kensington and the new Soda and Swine meatball haven at the corner of Adams and 3oth in North Park.

Terrific. Along with NP, are we competing with the beach areas for the title of Booze Central?

We should hand out AA meeting flyers in front of the bars, or post on Adams Avenue car windshields.

We have lived in abnormal heights for over 20 years and it just gets better and less normal all the time.

BLACKSMITHDAVE June 23, 2013 @ 9:40 a.m.

Still waiting for the undergrounding of our lovely power lines, can't wait! and I hear the city is rimming our street trees again, hurray!

Leeroy June 23, 2013 @ 11:14 a.m.

This neighborhood gets better by the week! I wish that Polite Provisions was where Heights Tavern is, and Soda and Swine was where Sycamore Den is... if those places were swapped it would be even more awesome!

eadrian June 24, 2013 @ 7:50 a.m.

My abnormal dog loves to sniff around and cruise normal heights. We wish the cars would slow down and enjoy the scenic adams ave. Woof

love Normal Heights, own a home since 1998-very eclectic wonderful neighborhood. lots of free activities and a very active neighborhood association. it certainly has changed over the years.

I absolutely love this neighborhood! I actually grew up in Poway and after I visited this neighborhood for the first time I knew I wanted to eventually move down here. I have lived here for a few years now and I love it more and more everyday. My favorite bar on Adams is Triple Crown Pub. I didn't discover this bar until after I moved here, but it is without a doubt one of my favorite places. Everyone who works there is friendly and I have never had a bad experience at that bar. I have also met some really cool (and interesting) people there. If you haven't been to TCP yet then I highly suggest going!

Ecodove June 27, 2013 @ 11:07 a.m.

I love our little community! Thank you all so much for your help finding our missing dog Lily! She was found this Monday and we are so happy to have our little family back together again!

s4davis June 27, 2013 @ 9:55 p.m.

I live more in the "Between" Heights which is perfect, if you haven't checked out Hanna's Gourmet, Cafe 21, Sabuku Sushi, Jayne's Gastropub, and of course Cantina Mayahuel I highly recommend doing so.

LiveFatDieYum April 5, 2016 @ 3:05 p.m.

We are buying a condo right around the corner from this strip of Adams.. I love Adams ave in general and instantly gravitated towards it when I moved from the right coast. There's a bunch of new places going in soon per the waitress at Soda and Swine. Excited to move to the neighborhood soon.

My hubbs and I just moved into town this month (June) and we love it here.. most notably, we loving finding street art everywhere! From tiny hidden stencils, to giant whole-wall murals... this community and our neighbors have been so welcoming. A random sweetheart waived hello to us the day we drove our U-haul up, there was a block party going on the week after, and there is tons of local music going on all the time. Also, we were the neighbors who gave out warm homemade from scratch brownies paired with Oatmeal Stout beers to everyone in our complex as a way to meet everyone. We know that's not normal, but that's the way we like it. AB-Normal Heights all the way <3

jmperkins June 28, 2013 @ 1:22 a.m.

I choose to live in normal heights because 1) it makes me feel a real sense of community 2) It has half a dozen bars, a comic book store, a game store, and a 24 hour coffee shop all within walking distance and 3) It just has an active pedestrian and biking community which feels great. There's always something going on, but even one block off of adams it's quiet enough to be able to nestle up in your apartment and get some sleep.

In short, Normal Heights feels like home.

I Love Abnormal Heights. Being a native to San Diego, I never knew this place existed until a friend of mine brought me over here during a street fair when I was around 14 years old. I have been frequenting ever since and now live here.

AGARCIACPA July 1, 2013 @ 10:53 p.m.

moved in 2006 and have loved it every since! great homes, people, bars, food and central to all san diego proper!

ziphius July 2, 2013 @ 11:56 a.m.

No one here has mentioned the main node, the junction box, the Center of the Universe, the meridian, the Stonehenge of Normal Heights..... It's where I go when I want to hear news from the neighborhood, relax and feel welcomed, or hear an occasional dirty joke. Dick and Anna run the place! Mariposa Ice Cream! If you live in Normal Heights and haven't been there, you really haven't lived in Normal Heights!

erniesd619 July 2, 2013 @ 10:55 p.m.

JohnnyENO July 30, 2013 @ 10:40 p.m.

Over here! Yeah, I've been hanging in the 'hood for about 6 years now (I call Abnormal Heights my vacation home, heheh). I must say, I'm really impressed with the number of improvements along Adams over the last few years. Heights Tavern has proven to be a nice place (keep up the good work!), but even with all the new establishments popping up, I dig that the OG businesses are still going strong. I'm talking about YOU Triple Crown, and YOU Antique Row Cafe. The 'hood is up an coming and here to stay.

So excited to be buying a house in Normal Heights! My hubby and I have lived in OB for 10 years so it looks like we better start trying on some skinny jeans. We will probably be moved in in time for the street fair! Hot diggity!
