El Cajon resident Nathan Raney began playing music in grade school, starting on the drums before picking up the bass and then guitar. While developing as a songwriter, he studied at Grossmont College and worked retail day jobs at businesses such as Costco. He was seen at his dad Jerry Raney’s side when the elder Raney took home a lifetime achievement trophy at the 2021 San Diego Music Awards, as well as gigging around town with Manifold and his own self-named progressive hard rock band. The Little Italy date is an album release party for Raney’s third studio full-length Maro and Manifestation, a blues rock album preceded so far by a single for “Maro,” with Raney’s backup band slated to feature bassist Calvan Christ, guitarist Steven Atkins, and drummer PJ Sweeny. The all-local bill includes psychedelic bordertown boogie band Kid Gruesome and Oceanside surf-punk rockers Atomic Surfers, who also incorporate funk and rockabilly into their sets.

Sprung Monkey at the Holding Company
May 23
Sprung Monkey were originally active from 1991 to 2002, selling CDs (over 30,000) out of their trunk before achieving breakout success on MTV, appearing on the Vans Warped Tour and ESPN's X-Games, and contributing tunes to many surf, skate, and snowboarding films. They cracked the Top 20 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, eventually coming to represent the same heavy 1990s alternative rock sound perfected by similar acts such as Biohazard, Primus, Suicidal Tendencies, and Faith No More. They scored radio hits like “Get ‘em Outta Here,” “Naked,” and “What's That You Say” before disbanding for several years, with members going on to groups like Accident Experiment, Kemistry, Unwritten Law, and Media Lab. Now reunited, the band will stage a full performance of their 1993 debut album Situation Life.
