Songwriter Sanctuary at Normal Heights United Methodist Church
March 27
Songwriter Sanctuary is a monthly, community-focused music series showcasing local talent in an intimate in-the-round setting, curated by singer-songwriter Lindsay White (The Lovebirds). Performances are staged in the acoustically rich hundred year-old Normal Heights venue that formerly hosted the Acoustic Music San Diego concert series. This edition will be celebrating Women’s History Month with a Baby Bushka Takeover featuring original songs from members of the local Kate Bush tribute act. Bush’s operatic brand of theatrical prog-pop is so well suited for stage presentations, something that’s not news to the members of the band. Their first Kate Bush Dance party was at the Casbah in December 2017, and they subsequently crowdfunded tours of the U.K. and Ireland in 2017 and 2022. Also appearing will be singer-songwriter Nancy Ross, Marie Haddad (whose song “JDITA” won Best Music Video at the 2019 San Diego Film Week Awards), and Heather Nation, a founding member of synth-pop band Belladon, who were nominated Best New Artist at the 2019 San Diego Music Awards. A pre-show busking performance occurs from 5:30-6:30 pm.

March 28
Creature Canyon's co-founder Austin Steele first developed his psychedelic alt-rock sound with Super Groupie, who released one album in summer 2014 and whose song “Lightning” appeared on the soundtrack of MTV’s Washington Heights. The title track to Creature Canyon’s early EP Life I Know was named the 91X Local Break Song for March 2017. The track, mixed and mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer and producer Alan Sanderson (Rolling Stones, etc.), was also shot as a video by director Mitchell Harris. They went on to win a $2000 second-place prize at the 2017 San Diego County Fair’s battle-of-the bands contest before releasing a seven-song EP the following year, Did You Want That. They released a couple of new singles last year, “Cheap Vacation” and “Fall Into Place,” and another dropped last month for “Shine.” The latter track came accompanied by a video with behind-the-scenes footage from the studio, featuring production by Noah Tauscher.

Homeless Sexuals at Kensington Club
March 28
Homeless Sexuals, fronted by David Buck (who used to book Thursday punk showcases for the Brass Rail in Hillcrest), have been playing unpredictable punk around since the late 1990s. The band splintered in late 2010, with Buck going on to form a new band, Zillion Happy Volts, but they resurfaced in 2013 and have managed to maintain their presence on the local scene through numerous lineup shifts. They’ve been mostly inactive since the Covid pandemic, but they resurfaced last year to celebrate nearly three decades of full contact rock and roll with performances that sported a new three-guitar lineup. The bill includes Participant, a new San Diego noise rock band featuring members of Spanakorzo, Sleep Lady, and Irradio. The evening is also slated to include a reunion of Fono, which formed outside London in 1996 before relocating to San Diego in the early 2000s and currently includes members from Diatribe.

Ravi Shankar Ensemble at Baker-Baum Concert Hall
March 29
Ravi Shankar was considered the world’s master player of the sitar, a 19-stringed instrument made of gourd and teak. He performed at the Monterey Pop Festival (1967) and Woodstock (1969), plus he organized the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971 with former Beatle and sitar pupil George Harrison. The Shankar family moved to Encinitas in the early 1990s, though they also maintained a residence in India. For awhile, he worked as a professor of music and guest lecturer at SDSU, until he passed away in December 2012 at the age of 92. Curated by Shankar’s wife Sukanya and daughter Anoushka Shankar, the Ravi Shankar Ensemble is a multi-generational collective of world-class musicians dedicated to the masterful compositions and enduring legacy of the late musician. In its debut tour, the Ensemble presents a program featuring visual elements from the Shankar archives alongside a selection of Shankar’s soul-stirring music.

Doug Walker Quintet at the Jazz Lounge
April 1
Originally from Sacramento, left-handed bassist-composer Doug Walker began playing electric bass at age 14, soon moving to an acoustic bass and studying with renowned pianist and educator, Dr. Joe Gilman. In 2001, Walker came to San Diego State University on full scholarship, eventually earning an M.M. degree in jazz studies and furthering his musical studies with Bob Magnusson, Gunnar Biggs, Rick Helzer, and Richard Thompson. Known for playing left-handed and focusing on melodic, linear, and "literate" upright bass playing, often handling both rhythmic support and melodic solos, he’s widely recognized for his versatility across jazz, blues, folk, and bluegrass. His debut album of original jazz compositions, Concurrent Lines, was nominated Best Jazz Album at the 2025 San Diego Music Awards. The College Area performance features the Doug Walker Quintet playing new original jazz by Walker, who will be accompanied by David Borgo (sax), Victor Baker (guitar), Tobin Chodos (piano), and Kevin Higuchi (drums).
