Tigers In Cairo at the Casbah

May 9

Fronted by singer David Martin, Tigers In Cairo took their name from a song by The Cure called “Fire In Cairo.” They combine the sound of 90s indie and shoegaze with the punk of their west coast hometown. Their debut single "Always Adored" dropped in September 2024. The bill includes Chula Vista post-hardcore band Hingada, founded by members of Some Girls, Secret Fun Club, I Wish I, and Kill Holiday.

The Paladins at the Casbah

May 10

The Paladins were already combining country and early rock ‘n’ roll with blues and rockabilly while still attending high school. In the 1980s, you could find them playing around 200 shows per year, driving up to 75,000 miles annually. They’ve performed and toured with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Los Lobos, X, the Blasters, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. In fact, it was Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson who took the Paladins into an Austin, Texas studio and recorded their self-titled 1987 debut album. For a while, they even brewed their own beer and shared it backstage. In 2018, the band received a San Diego Music Awards Lifetime Achievement trophy.

Manganista at Kensington Club

May 10

Manganista makes rock music with an island vibe. The band released a new 7-inch last year, followed by a box set called Human Being. They will debut music from an upcoming full-length which was successfully crowd-funded, enabling the band to again recruit Ben Moore to record and mix the record, with cover art to again be provided by frequent visual collaborator Dave Talbott. Also featured will be Marujah (who earned San Diego Music Awards for Best World Music Album twice in four years) and the debut performance of a new band named Payback & Associates.

Cumbia Machin at Soda Bar

May 11

Anchored by the beat of drummer Joaquin Hernandez (Chicken Farm, B-Side Players, Sol Power, Agua Dulce), Cumbia Machin is an electro-act that combines the use of live electronics and sequencers to create original dub-style Cumbia. The band was nominated Best World Music at the 2013 San Diego Music Awards. Headline act Las Calakas are a cumbia fusion band based in Phoenix, Arizona who founded the “Cumbia Til You Drop” mobile party series.

Cassie B at Soda Bar

May 14

Cassie B is heavily influenced by the funk and pop stylings of the 1970s. Regarding her band The Stingers, she says "There are several writers in the group, so subtle hints of other genres occasionally come through, such as indie rock and soul music." She also performs solo, and does occasional tribute sets to artists such as Taylor Swift. The City Heights show is headlined by theatrical/operatic western rocker Elizabeth Bowersox, with a lineup that also includes Chloe Lou and the Lidells.
