Farm Truck at Grand Ole BBQ Flinn Springs
May 7
Influenced by L.A.’s cowpunk scene of the 1980s, the burgeoning alternative country scene of the 1990s, and the Oklahoma/Texas Red Dirt sound, Farm Truck was formed in East County in 2005. Led by singer-songwriter Craig Fischer and featuring a dual lead guitar lineup akin to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Allman Brothers, they combine roots rock, Texas country, and cowpunk, often performing at events like the Barn Dance in Ramona, where the group is currently based. Combining elements of Tom Petty roots rock and Steve Earle Texas country with a touch of The Replacements, the band has opened for Artimus Pyle (Lynyrd Skynyrd), Cody Canada (Cross Canadian Ragweed), The Black Lillies, and Jason Boland & The Stragglers, as well as many other Red Dirt country artists. Their debut full-length Sadie was released in late 2022, and they’re said to be working on a follow-up album.

Formed in 2010, garage surf-punk rock band Mrs. Magician was founded by members of Drug Wars, Northern Towns, Cults, and Boomsnake, as well as former members of Please Mr. Gravedigger and First Wave Hello. Their 2012 full-length Strange Heaven, produced by John Reis (Hot Snakes, Rocket From the Crypt) for his Swami Records label, won Best Pop Album at that year’s San Diego Music Awards. A collection called B-Sides was released in 2013 on the Thrill Me Records label, and the band’s sophomore album Bermuda, again produced by Reis (who has also directed band videos like the one for “There is No God”) dropped in 2016. This City Heights performance is an album release show for their third studio album Spiritual Hangover, issued again by Reis’ Swami Records and described in advance press as “sun-soaked, hook-heavy power pop.” The bill includes local experimental art-rock/post-punk band Permissive Rot and San Diego garage rockers The Sines, fronted by Dave Castaneda and soon to release their debut album Warning! Sines!

Billy Galewood at Sunshine Brooks Theatre
May 9
Django’s Jazz Caravan returns to Oceanside, presented by the Six String Society and described as “a modern-day vaudeville act goes to the Moulin Rouge,” with both an afternoon matinee and an evening show. Among the performers is Billy Galewood, who first made his mark on the music world under the name Bushwalla. His musical career kicked off in Cleveland, Ohio, before he relocated to New York City to study musical theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. There, he breathed fire and juggled on street corners for a time in order to make ends meet, something which he still does, on occasion, in his stage act. After moving to San Diego, he continued to hone his eclectic acoustic/hip-hop sound and took part in several musical projects with new neighbor Jason Mraz. Among their collaborations is the song "Curbside Prophet," which ended up on a Mraz album. Galewood retired his Bushwalla persona in 2015 in favor of performing and recording under his given name. Also scheduled to appear is Luca Pino & Pino Noir, Eva Mikhailovna & the Pepper Moons, Rosemary Watson, Idun Carling, and Dexter Berrogain.
