Zak Najor at Lou Lou’s Jungle Room

Funky jazz drummer Zak Najor is a founding member of The Greyboy Allstars, helping to develop their signature boogaloo sound and performing on influential early releases. His 1970s-inspired soul-funk band Zbonics began as a studio project that eventually grew into a full live band that he uses to express his love for70s-style live-instrumentation funk and soul. He’s also a core member and tenured drummer for the genre-bending local ensemble Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, and has toured and recorded with the prominent saxophonist on Denson albums like The Bridge and Brother's Keeper. For this University Heights appearance, he’ll be joined by local jazz stars including fellow percussionist Steve Haney (Jungle Fire, Otro Mundo), along with Alex Ciavarelli (guitar), Ian Harland (vibes), Antar Martin (bass), Nakul Tiruviluamala (keys), and Derek Cannon (trumpet).

Sam Hinton Folk Heritage Festival at Old Poway Park

Admission to this year’s Sam Hinton Folk Heritage Festival is free, with attractions to include a farmer’s market, vendor booths, and rides on historic steam locomotive trains, as well as various open jam sessions. Spoken word storytelling hosted by Storytellers of San Diego happens from noon until 4pm in the Porter House, with prepared themed such as Old Time Tales, Treasure Tales, and Wild West Tales featuring folk mythology, historical stories, and animal legends, as well as open mic sessions. A family contra dance in Templars Hall from 1 to 4pm features guided folk dances that the community is invited to either watch or participate in. Shaded seating will be available for audience members at the Gazebo Mainstage, where performers slated to appear include Americana bluegrass trio Whiskey and Burlap, Cajun swing band Billy Lee and the Swamp Critters, jazz singer Kaylee Daughtery, jazzy folk-blues duo Nathan and Jessie, folk troubadour Fast Heart Mart, and The Winter Sisters, an original songwriting trio with Cathryn Beeks, Sande Lollis, and Bonnie Nicholls.

Admission is free for the family friendly Julian Music Festival, featuring food and drinl selections, local artisans, and vendors such as Quecho’s Elevated Mexican Eatery, The Toasty Tap, Me & Granny’s Creations, Katy Angel (“Katy Makes Art”), Tara Holsapple, Rock Your World, Humble Abode, Wicked Rose Candles, The Woven Paws, Julian Pathways, Inc., Monica Rue Designs, and Britta Mosaic and Beads. Musical performances take place throughout the day, with locals on the bill to include former San Diego Padre and longtime local musician Tim Flannery with his band The Lunatic Fringe. The son of a Kentucky preacher officially retired from his job as third base coach for the San Francisco Giants in 2014 and has since built a growing career as a singer-songwriter. Also scheduled to appear is Sara Petite, Elizabeth Bowersox, Salinas Road, Rootful, and Donn Bree & Friends.

Founded in Escondido circa 2001, DIY rockers The Stereotypes play late-60s inspired psychedelic pop and garage rock, blended with 80s and 90s alt-rock and post-punk. Taking inspiration from acts like The Strokes, Wilco, The Buzzcocks, and The Velvet Underground, the band utilizes a DIY, lo-fi aesthetic relying on catchy melodies, jangly guitars, and layered, textured production. Their songs have been heard in various television shows, including NBC's 2008 Knight Rider reboot, the USA Network series Suits, and three episodes of ABC's sci-fi drama Kyle XY, as well as the Universal Pictures feature film A Dog’s Journey. The Little Italy show is headlined by the Daniel Ezra Band, a local project blending acoustic folk with bluegrass and vintage garage rock. Also scheduled to appear is local duo Hi-Five Ghost, founded in 2023 and known for their fuzzed-out fusion of melodic garage rock, pop, and grunge music.

Singer Christian Taylor is known for his raspy, soulful voice. The grandson of the Ventures drummer Mel Taylor and Las Vegas musician Mary Kaye, he’s also a track and field athlete who specializes in the triple jump. Taylor blends a love for soul, blues, and Americana into his own raw sound, relying mostly on his distinct voice. His debut album Daydream was released in 2016, followed by an in-studio EP, The Citizen Sessions, in 2017. Taylor signed with San Diego's Pacific Records in late 2019, just before he performed at that year’s Wonderfront Festival, on a ship sailing the bay and in a session available on Youtube’s Jam in the Van series. He released an EP in 2024 called The Moon View Sessions, and a new single dropped in April for his track “Now I’m.”
