The Music Box presents Saved By the '90s, this month featuring San Diegoβs own senior citizen sendup Geezer, who pretty much sum up their act with the track βWe Ainβt No Weezer Tribute Band.β Twice nominated Best Tribute Band by the San Diego Music Awards (2010 and 2011), βGeezer is coming to your town to steal your Depends and date your grannies,β warns the band, which is comprised of several notable local vets of bands like Rookie Card and Cover Me Badd dressed up as old men and mashing up tracks by Weezer and other '80s and '90s FM radio acts, all while passing out hard candies pulled from the pockets of checkered bathrobes.The actual Weezer liked them so much that they were invited onto the stage with the band at Cox Arena in 2008.

Pianist Brenda Greggio originally came from the world of classical music, but had been learning jazz since she was 9 or 10. By 13, she could tackle complicated compositions such as Chick Coreaβs Latin jazz showstopper βSpain.β A graduate of the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts in Paradise Hills and an alumni of Gilbert Castellanosβ local Young Lions Jazz Conservatory musical mentorship program, Greggio will present a two-night tribute to iconic jazz pianist Keith Jarrett. Sheβll perform solo on Friday, August 1, and will be joined in a trio format for Saturdayβs show on August 2.

The Material came together after frontwoman Colleen DβAgostino moved to the area to pursue a music degree at SDSU and co-founded the band with fellow SDSU student (and future husband) Jon Moreaux on guitar. Often compared to emo groups like Paramore, the band won a 2007 trip to the TRL Studios in New York to play on MTV for the Dew Circuit Breakout. Their song βMoving to Seattleβ from their first EP is featured on the video game Rock Band, and theyβve had songs appear in MTV's The Hills.Β Their song βWhat Happens Nextβ became the opening theme to the Australian Reality TV show Freshwater Blue.

South African-born, California-grown Americana singer-songwriter Jesse Ray Smith is a multiple San Diego Music Awards nominee, including for Best Country Or Americana Artist and Best County or Americana Song for his track βSanta Ana Winds.β Citing influences such as Ray Lamontagne, Van Morrison, Tom Petty,The Eagles, and Bruce Springsteen, he specializes in acoustic rock and country fused with smooth, deep soul. His songs deal with topics such as coping with a tumultuous childhood stricken with addiction and abuse, and focusing on the quest to find love and freedom despite the challenges of life in modern America.

The Peter Sprague Quartet at North Coast Repertory Theatre

San Diego-based guitarist, composer and producer Peter Sprague was eight when his family moved from Cleveland to Del Mar, where surfing and music became, as he puts it, his βlife and religion.β His Peter Sprague Quartet explores the jazz tradition of improvisation but with a slightly different spin β they bring their jazz viewpoint to songs that resonate with the boomers. They start with The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, James Taylor, and Cream. For this Solana Beach performance, the quartet will include Leonard Patton on vocals, Danny Green on piano, Mackenzie Leighton on bass, and Sprague playing a one-of-a-kind double neck guitar.
