Geezer at Music Box

August 1

The Music Box presents Saved By the '90s, this month featuring San Diego’s own senior citizen sendup Geezer, who pretty much sum up their act with the track “We Ain’t No Weezer Tribute Band.” Twice nominated Best Tribute Band by the San Diego Music Awards (2010 and 2011), “Geezer is coming to your town to steal your Depends and date your grannies,” warns the band, which is comprised of several notable local vets of bands like Rookie Card and Cover Me Badd dressed up as old men and mashing up tracks by Weezer and other '80s and '90s FM radio acts, all while passing out hard candies pulled from the pockets of checkered bathrobes. The actual Weezer liked them so much that they were invited onto the stage with the band at Cox Arena in 2008.

Brenda Greggio at the Jazz Lounge

August 1 and 2

Pianist Brenda Greggio originally came from the world of classical music, but had been learning jazz since she was 9 or 10. By 13, she could tackle complicated compositions such as Chick Corea’s Latin jazz showstopper “Spain.” A graduate of the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts in Paradise Hills and an alumni of Gilbert Castellanos’ local Young Lions Jazz Conservatory musical mentorship program, Greggio will present a two-night tribute to iconic jazz pianist Keith Jarrett. She’ll perform solo on Friday, August 1, and will be joined in a trio format for Saturday’s show on August 2.

The Material at Soda Bar

August 2

The Material came together after frontwoman Colleen D’Agostino moved to the area to pursue a music degree at SDSU and co-founded the band with fellow SDSU student (and future husband) Jon Moreaux on guitar. Often compared to emo groups like Paramore, the band won a 2007 trip to the TRL Studios in New York to play on MTV for the Dew Circuit Breakout. Their song “Moving to Seattle” from their first EP is featured on the video game Rock Band, and they’ve had songs appear in MTV's The HillsTheir song “What Happens Next” became the opening theme to the Australian Reality TV show Freshwater Blue.

Jesse Ray Smith at The Lodge at Torrey Pines

August 3

South African-born, California-grown Americana singer-songwriter Jesse Ray Smith is a multiple San Diego Music Awards nominee, including for Best Country Or Americana Artist and Best County or Americana Song for his track “Santa Ana Winds.” Citing influences such as Ray Lamontagne, Van Morrison, Tom Petty,The Eagles, and Bruce Springsteen, he specializes in acoustic rock and country fused with smooth, deep soul. His songs deal with topics such as coping with a tumultuous childhood stricken with addiction and abuse, and focusing on the quest to find love and freedom despite the challenges of life in modern America.

The Peter Sprague Quartet at North Coast Repertory Theatre

August 4 and 5

San Diego-based guitarist, composer and producer Peter Sprague was eight when his family moved from Cleveland to Del Mar, where surfing and music became, as he puts it, his “life and religion.” His Peter Sprague Quartet explores the jazz tradition of improvisation but with a slightly different spin – they bring their jazz viewpoint to songs that resonate with the boomers. They start with The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, James Taylor, and Cream. For this Solana Beach performance, the quartet will include Leonard Patton on vocals, Danny Green on piano, Mackenzie Leighton on bass, and Sprague playing a one-of-a-kind double neck guitar.
