Dead Rock West at the Casbah

August 7

Frank Lee Drennen's band Dead Rock West formed in 1992, while the singer/songwriter/guitarist was still in Gregory Page's project the Hatchet Brothers and his own group Loam. Co-singer Cindy Wasserman's brother is famed bass player Rob Wasserman. Their most recent album Glitter & Gold came with a politically charged single and video for “Revolution in the Garden,” written 30 years ago by Drennen and indie rocker Patrick Dennis when they played in a Leucadia duo called The Homer Gunns. The bill includes Cash & Skye, a Los Angeles-based duo comprised of Henri Cash and Sophia Skye.

Scary Pierre at the Casbah

August 9

Scary Pierre is driven by a darkly infectious post-punk sound with a hedonistic rock ‘n’ roll streak,” according to the website for this female-fronted rock group. Formed in early 2018, the band features Black Hondo singer Lucina Mays Gonzalez, guitarist Alia Jyawook (Vaginals, Hot Nerds), bassist Mike Delgado (Moving Units, shark Attack), and drummer Charlie Brownell (Buzzkill Romantics, Creepxotica). Whittier, California post-punk group Plague Vendor headlines a bill that also features locals Mistress 77, whose most recent full-length Can’t Stop dropped in 2023.

Lenny Kaye at Town & Country Hotel & Convention Center

August 10

It’s time again for Tiki Oasis, taking place over several days and featuring fashion shows, sunset dinners, disc jockeys, art exhibits, educational seminars, a Tiki Marketplace, tropical cocktails curated by mixologists, and more. Even without a membership badge, some events can be attended with a separate ticket purchase, such as Sunday’s performance by Lenny Kaye. Known for his work with Patti Smith and for producing others, he has for decades helmed the popular Nuggets series of underground garage band compilations, as well as co-authoring Waylon Jennings’ autobiography. Hosted by Mike and Anja Stax of locally-published Ugly Things Magazine, the Tiki Oasis closing party includes pinball games, go-go dancers, vinyl record vendors, a no-host bar, DJ Tony the Tyger, and local mod mainstays The Loons will also perform.
