Nerdcore Night: Nerf Herder, Tsar, and Kirby's Dream Band

Geek rock and video game covers at the Ruby Room in Hillcrest

Even if you don’t consider yourself especially nerdy, there’s a good chance you’ve heard a song or two from Santa Barbara pop punk poindexters Nerf Herder, a self-proclaimed “geek rock” outfit best known for composing the theme song to Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the TV series) and their 1997 tribute to Van Halen.

As part of the Ruby Room’s (1271 University Ave. – Hillcrest) Nerdcore Night series, Nerf Herder will be playing on Thursday, April 25 alongside LA power-poppers Tsar and local video game anthem noodlers Kirby's Dream Band.

You may recognize Tsar's track "Calling All Destroyers" from the opening credits of James Gunn film Super.

“We all grew up on Nintendo and Star Wars,” Nerdcore promoter Aubree Miller told the Reader last May.

“It's a part of our childhood and for a lot of us it's a part of our adulthood, too. Nerdcore night is about embracing that kind of fun and taking ownership of your nerdiness.”

As any nerd worth their weight in glitterstim spice can tell you, Nerf Herder takes their name from The Empire Strikes Back, when Princess Leia Organa calls Han Solo a "stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder," (nerfs are fictional Star Wars bison) to which a smooth-as-a-baby-bantha’s-butt Solo responds, "Who's scruffy-looking?"

The band is rumored to be working on a new album to follow their 2008 LP Nerf Herder IV, but for a taste of what they've been up to lately, here’s a track they dropped last year on a Crappy Records compilation which also featured nerdcore magistrate MC Lars.

Presale tickets are 10 credits – 8 p.m. – 21 and up.
