Border News: OK to Eat the Meat; FBI Training; Mother Arrested

TIJUANA BC (El Sol de Tijuana, Ana Luz Sánchez Aguirre, 6/14/11) - The Secretary of Health and Agriculture reported that the consumption of meat in Mexico is safe. There is not a widespread problem with the use of Clenbuterol, a banned substance in animal feed by Federal Animal Health Legislation. This is why the meat consuming population can relax. In addition, when a case of poisoning is detected, the Health Secretary intervenes immediately. The Sagarpa participates in the sanction of who uses clenbuterol to fatten cattle. The sanctions range from four to eight years in prison, and a fine of up to 3,500 times the current minimum wage when the offense was committed. This was announced in a Federal Department of Health press release, where it is very important to clarify that poisoning associated with the consumption of beef can cause palpitations, nervousness, tremors, involuntary tremors of the fingers, headache, increased sweating, insomnia, possible muscle spasms, increased blood pressure and nausea. Cases of infected persons who consumed meat with residues of clenbuterol were reduced from 795 in 2007 to 297 in 2010, at the national level. In terms of health impacts, the admissions rate is low and cases have been declining: in 2007, the national rate was 2.5 for every million inhabitants and for 2010 was 0.81 also for each million which indicates that the probability of exposure is low. The Secretary of Health and Agriculture authorities have reinforced prevention of risks associated with this situation. Since 2008, State Governments have presented at least 22 criminal charges to the General Attorney of the Republic (PGR) against persons responsible for use of this substance to fatten cattle. The federal Government, along with State health authorities regularly monitor the production and sale of meat in the country.

TIJUANA BC (El Sol de Tijuana, Manuel Cordero, 6/13/11) - Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Agents trained four women with the State preventive police (PEP) in modern survival techniques, proper firearm handling, high risk intervention cases and identification of stolen vehicles. The training time with special agents of the FBI was from June 6 - 10 in San Diego, California. The State public security secretary argues it is a process of strengthening females in police operations. The State unit allows personnel of the agency to come to the United States for training "in what the officers seek; to be well prepared to combat crime in Baja California", he said. "It is important to recognize the courage of women in the ranks of the PEP. With gallantry, strength and honor they have distinguished themselves in stopping crime in the various municipalities of the State," added the Secretariat.

TIJUANA BC (El Sol de Tijuana, Manuel Cordero, 6/13/11) - Municipal police arrested Antonia Santana Iturbide, 33, with 13 packages of synthetic drugs described as "glass" and her 11-month-old daughter. Officers in patrol unit 4763 were hiding among a few vehicles parked on calle Circunvalación and Chapultepec in colonia Tomás Aquino at delegación Mesa de Otay. Questioning her attitude, she confessed to drug problems and removed a plastic bag of drugs. Then she asked about her daughter Jasmine Jade. She was arrested and forwarded to the Narcomenudeo joint unit, while the innocent girl was sent for safekeeping to a hostel for the Integral Development of the Family.
