Juan and Adrienne's Bavarian spring break
Fancy-schmancy free European trips may be how Latino former-seminarians who hold safe seats in Congress learn style from the rich and famous whom they have to hit up for future campaign contributions. Such experience may also serve as a preview to life among the One Percent which may follow a long career in elective American politics.— April 30, 2015 4:24 p.m.
What we hate about San Diego
Loved this piece. With the exception of one thoughtful construction worker who noted the number of homeless people on the streets and the Latina who lamented the loss of Bob Filner whom she thought was on track to be the greatest mayor this city has ever had, everyone else was a perfect representative of "America's Finest City." Like totally perfect.— April 30, 2015 4:13 p.m.
Rainmaking 101
Maybe the business school "events planner" at SDSU can pop over to SDSU's subsidiary inewsource and lend them a hand devising news stories that will mesh with the interests of big donors to the school's Campanile Foundation. Hands wash one another in so many ways at that institution, why not get more bang for the buck?— April 29, 2015 10:26 p.m.
Faulconer's big-money re-election bid
That Centerplate bid for a concession contract at the Q where no questions were ever asked of the (doomed) applicant are reminiscent of the slam-dunk achieved years ago when a highly-qualified school superintendent candidate was frostily dispatched in favor of non-educator Alan Bersin. I guess the more things seem to change, the more they remain the same.— April 29, 2015 1:58 p.m.
Thanks, alleged global warming
My personal hotel had Boston occupants in February and New Yorkers in March and April. No TMD cuts or TOT revenue. No minimum wages -- no wages of any kind. Cotton sheets, no a/c, just fresh air, private bathroom.— April 27, 2015 9:48 p.m.

Dwbat has unusual facility with the whatsis that makes these funny images: first it was Gov. Jerry Brown and CPUC head Michael Peevey engulfed in San Bruno-like hellfire; now it's this Malin/Gumby image. I'm giving it a 5 rating, assuming that's the highest and best equivalent of being Numero Uno.— April 27, 2015 1:21 p.m.
San Diego pit bull owners and their detractors
What politician will pick up on this pit bull-defender demographic? Is there cross-over with NRA membership? Associated Drug Dealers of America? Cliven Bundy followers? California secessionists? An amazing out-of-the-woodwork response. May the Reader continue to mine this rich vein of inquiry, as we all like to know who our neighbors are here in America's Finest City.— April 27, 2015 12:57 p.m.
San Diego pit bull owners and their detractors
Pit bull owners in these remarks seem to be hyper-defensive zealots, cfit, of an unusually vicious (or "protective") breed of dog. Yet here you seem to be equating pit bulls with unarmed black residents of Ferguson, Mo. I don't get it.— April 27, 2015 12:38 p.m.
New U-T San Diego vice-boss same as the old
A complicated tale here, worthwhile for keeping the record straight as local (and national) journalism history excruciatingly unfolds. I assume the U-T's executive addition of Mark Ficarra means that U-T editor Jeff Light doesn't have to be COO-ing as much as usual. (I agree with dwbat that well-spoken and educated Light would never use "lay" out of context.) And as for the rogues' gallery of male media moguls, well, I still like Malin "Gumby" Burnham the best.— April 27, 2015 12:24 p.m.
City hall crimes veiled by anonymity
While we're talking about taxpayer ripoffs by unidentified City employees as well as more notorious one like Julie Dubick and Gerry Braun, it was announced today that the City of San Diego will be paying out $1.3 million to victims of ex-cop Christopher Hays who served only five months in prison for assaulting two women while on duty. And that's in addition to $8.2 million recently awarded female victims of ex-cop Anthony Arevalos who's in the slammer for eight years. That's almost $10 million, folks. And they're thinking about making homeowners pay for trash collection?— April 25, 2015 9:49 a.m.
