Bold-faced retirement
He might get some self-respect back, although after twenty years of shameless flackery that's doubtful. Or is this just a step by Qualcomm to replace a small shark with a bigger and more aggressive one?— May 17, 2017 7:49 p.m.
Anybody but General Atomics
We should be using new technologies to make war. But that doesn't mean that there was any logic to committing to using a technology that was in the R&D phase. Steam catapults on aircraft carriers are just about as old as the carrier itself, and do work just fine. It might also be worth noting that when we have sent out troops into combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, we had the enemy outgunned, yet were bedeviled by low-tech weapons used against us. The IED (improvised explosive device) was a homemade land mine, and used with often-devastating effect. All the supersonic fighter-bombers in the world, the best tanks, and even detection devices can be defeated by determined enemy fighters. The situation in Vietnam was similar.— May 14, 2017 9:51 a.m.
Tyson Foods knocks some value off Circle Foods
I recall a Tyson and some shady dealings a long time ago in Arkansas involving Bill and Hil. Or am I confusing things? If my memory is accurate, Tyson has been buying politicians and influence for decades. So, they got a comeuppance, huh? Circle Foods? Never heard of them.— May 14, 2017 7:48 a.m.
Anybody but General Atomics
Maybe Trump has it right. Some sort of electromagnetic launch device can look great on paper but not work in practice. If it isn't ready now, when will it be ready? Sticking with a proven method, steam, may be far superior in the short run. And maybe in the intermediate term. And, who knows, the long run. I don't have a high opinion of the Blue(s) bros, and likely never will. Their output hasn't been all that inspiring.— May 12, 2017 8:32 p.m.
Caught red-handed before OB Planning Board
Well put. You do a great job of cutting through the underbrush and getting to the heart of the matter. For me, I found the description of the hearing to be hilarious. He got caught red-handed, stood stony faced, and watched his proposal get rejected by the advisory board. I'd have loved to be there to see the theater as it played out.— May 11, 2017 4:32 p.m.
Not so forest-friendly
She's just another example of a Dem liberal--or so she would have the voters and supporters believe--who is for sale to the highest bidder. She's doing the same sort of things her soul sister Susan Davis is doing on the federal level. While it's difficult to win elections without a lot of money, and that favor-seekers are the best source of funds, a few of the elected officials do manage to avoid becoming complete sell-outs. She is not one of those few.— May 11, 2017 4:28 p.m.
Susan Luzzaro
It was my misfortune to learn of Susan and her reporting late. I never met the lady. But what an impact she had on the South County and its institutions! Most of us would become discouraged at being a lonely voice in the wilderness for years on end, but she persevered. Her writing shows a great talent for expression. I too will miss her.— May 10, 2017 9:15 a.m.
City faces yet another damaged sidewalk lawsuit
My thought exactly, aardvark. While it is apparently not illegal to use the sidewalk for cycling, in a spot like that with a stripe out a couple feet from the curb, there was no real need to be on the sidewalk. And no responsible cyclist should be going fast on the sidewalk. If he was "ejected" he was in fact going too fast for conditions.— May 10, 2017 9:07 a.m.
UCSD literature majors — why they exist
This piece seems to be as much about a person's odyssey in life as it is about study of literature. As to UCSD, it is supposed to be a full-fledged, well-rounded campus with a full slate of offerings. No longer, we are told, is it just a place for pre-med students to attend while majoring in a life science. But old ideas die hard, and it is likely that humanities are getting the short end of the stick. But, if that is true, it is due to lack of interest on the part of students. As long as a university education is seen as vocational training and not as a foundation for life in general, things like literature will take a back seat to STEM. Really, where are the jobs that need a degree in English (or French, Italian, Greek, German, Russian, Japanese or . . .) and how many of them are there? But what I wonder is why, after four days of this piece on the website, no lit major or other language type has bothered to post a comment. Come on you artsy-fartsy people, share what you think.— May 7, 2017 5:25 p.m.
Arrested trying to withdraw inheritance money from Pt. Loma Wells Fargo
One tiny point here is the use of the term "withdraw." I"m assuming that in this case it refers to wanting to withdraw the funds in cash. That's a lot of folding money, folks. And once he walked out the door with it, it was gone. Anything that made the transaction bogus would cost the bank the entire amount. If, on the other hand, the request was for a check payable to him or to a third party, the picture changes. When there's no cash involved, there is no need for a report of a cash transaction exceeding $10,000, and little likelihood that the customer would be robbed in, say, the bank's parking lot. Using large amounts of cash for anything nowadays attracts plenty of negative attention. There's nothing illegal about it, but it makes some people very antsy. And that is what seems to have happened here.— May 7, 2017 9:39 a.m.
