Calcite Mine and Slot Canyon
I would not recommend biking this trail. The ruts are quite deep and because it is hard packed sand, it would be easy to slip and spill. The 4-wheelers who do go up are usually very high mounted and straddle the ruts where they can. Biking this road would be an invitation to a disaster.

Calcite Mine and Slot Canyon
Visited this site years ago and took my 4-wheel drive vehicle up the treacherous road. The view was nice and yes, the calcite is everywhere, but on the way down my vehicle got slammed around so bad, one of the side rails came off. Would not do it again, but it was a great adventure.

Vista Woman Admits Stealing Books From County Libraries
Something doesn't sound right to me about this story. First of all, how does the women get 2,000 books out of the library? I mean, I know she probably took more than one at a time, but even so--what did she do, go through the doors without stopping 750 times? You can't go through the doors without the alarm going off, so where was the staff? And this business of her selling the books on Amazon...I've bought plenty of used books through Amazon, and can't say I ever got a library book--and even if you manage to get the library catalog band off the binding, there is still the branch stamp across the edge of the pages. You think people bought books, and after realizing they were library books, they didn't contact Amazon to have the seller blocked? I think this lady is your basic whack-job klepto, and the "I sell them on Amazon to feed my kids" is just a half-baked defense. This lady needs lots of counseling and should pay a realistic restitution, and definitely forfeit her borrowing privileges for a couple of years. It's good that she got her kids into reading though. Based on that, I'd cut her restitution by 25%.

Plaza de Panama Committee Lobbies City Hall
Ace has a lot more of a grip on this city than just the parking venues named; they also have many of the minor shopping plazas, which after 6 PM turn into "Paid Parking Only" lots, courtesy of Ace, of course. What I'd like to know is what is Jacobs interest in this Balboa Park thing? Is he in for a cut of the parking fees that will be levied should this thing pass and get built? Or does he have other plans for the Panama Plaza other than restoring it to its original pedestrian-friendly walkway? I find it hard to believe the later as it destroys one historical thing (the Cabrillo Bridge) as it restores the other.

Deb did 1147 tweets last month
I have been observing this whole "Tweet" revolution for some time now and have to say I don't like what I see. As much as I see the benefits to having instant communications and an enormous shared community that allows for a fully democratic and participatory experience, I also see a huge segment of the population turning into obsessive/compulsive misfits. I can't count the times I've been sitting with friends talking to the top of someone's head because they are full face in their iPhone. And if it weren't for the consequences and penalty for murder, I would have killed several people who could not bear to turn the damn thing off for an hour and a half during a movie! How rude can you be? I don't have a problem with these new technologies; I participate myself, to a limited degree. The problem I have is with the poor decision-making on the part of those who cannot bring themselves to put the thing down and focus on the here and now. Why are these Twits so obsessed with the virtual, and so absent from the real? It's like living with ghosts! They're here, but they're not here. There is a phrase, "presence of mind," that in my opinion describes the problem to a t (and don't ask me what that phrase means). A person who knows how to react to an emergency is said to have had the presence of mind to know what to do; knows how to react to an unanticipated situation. At least, that's one use of it. The issue with the Twitty ones, is that they no longer have the presence of mind; they're not fully there...because they have to check their incoming messages...to see what is going on someplace else...with someone else...no matter who they are with...it's not the one they are most concerned about. They are much more concerned with...well, they don't know, until they check. I still enjoy my time with family and friends, but I sure do miss the days when they were there, completely.

“Kiss-In” Planned at Embarcadero’s Unconditional Surrender Statue
Well, I'm under the impression the statue was on loan and the owner wants it back...someplace up north. I think they should design a new statue; something that most of the sailors today would relate to....something like a sailor with a hooker in TJ. For many who served, an experience like that is much more memorable than something that appeared back at the end of WWII. Plus, it would represent more of the cross-cultural experience, that San Diego offers.

Hikers stumble upon marijuana plantation in Cuyamaca State Park
Well, this is an amazing story. I think these young men ought to get something for their perseverance, stealthy sleuthing, and adherence to the high ideals of American law and order! If it had not been for their assistance to our brave and dedicated law enforcement officers, this marijuana might have ended up in the pipe of some drug-crazed hippie, and the next thing you know, somebody's mother might have had her head chopped off! We all know, it's a doobie in one hand and a hypodermic in the other, and God knows where it might go from there! Yessiree, these boys should at the very least be given Junior G-Man badges, and an official Smokey Bear baseball hat. I mean, consider: these brave young men had to push their way through thorn bushes! And walk through dirty, muddy, stream beds! Plus, they actually figured out that if you find water hoses running through the forest, chances are somebody is growing something! Would you have known that? No, these guys assisted in bringing to justice, potentially ultra-violent criminals, who, aside from growing succulent buds, left actual litter on the ground! Why if it hadn't been for these stalwart souls, some Mexicans might have put food in their children's bellies, and thousands of others would be smoking the evil weed and smiling like fools, having a good time. I think the Governor should be informed. In fact, I think the President ought to be informed! Recognition is totally in order! God help us if we ever have to live in a world where brave men such as these are not around to protect us from the possibility of enjoying our lives and the horrible possibility of coming face to face with a stoned pot head! Praise the Lord; stomp the ground; and raise high the rats-ass flag. Just to show how much we care. Shame on you, boys; shame on you. You ever consider Geo-caching?

La Bufadora, Baja – Escape from SoCal Sprawl
Devoid of typical entanglements? You can say that again. A more credible world? I don't think so, Tom. There is nothing typical about what you may find yourself in the middle of there, and "credible" loses something in translation at times. Just ask the dozens of ex-pat Americans who bought homes in Punta Banda and spent 20 years or more and thousands of dollars fixing them up, thinking they would spend their retirement days enjoying all that is Mexico. They ended up getting booted out after the local "Ejido" informed them, in spite of their Mexican attorneys words, and in spite of the mortgages signed and issued by the Mexican banks, the land belonged to the community. The Mexican Supreme Court upheld the decision and the Federales arrived to make sure the gringos were out by the specified date. Don't get me wrong; you can't beat the natural beauty of the place and the shops and restaurants add color and spice to the scene. But you do have to be careful in terms of doing any kind of business there because you will find yourself in someplace akin to never-never land, should a dispute arise. For those who remember what happened in Punta Banda, La Bufadora is not the only blow hole in the area.

Calcite Mine and Slot Canyon
I would not recommend biking this trail. The ruts are quite deep and because it is hard packed sand, it would be easy to slip and spill. The 4-wheelers who do go up are usually very high mounted and straddle the ruts where they can. Biking this road would be an invitation to a disaster.— March 3, 2012 9:01 a.m.
Calcite Mine and Slot Canyon
Visited this site years ago and took my 4-wheel drive vehicle up the treacherous road. The view was nice and yes, the calcite is everywhere, but on the way down my vehicle got slammed around so bad, one of the side rails came off. Would not do it again, but it was a great adventure.— March 1, 2012 8:40 a.m.

Based on that, I'd cut her restitution by 25%.— February 22, 2012 10:39 p.m.
Sheriff Seeks Supporters

Plaza de Panama Committee Lobbies City Hall
Ace has a lot more of a grip on this city than just the parking venues named; they also have many of the minor shopping plazas, which after 6 PM turn into "Paid Parking Only" lots, courtesy of Ace, of course. What I'd like to know is what is Jacobs interest in this Balboa Park thing? Is he in for a cut of the parking fees that will be levied should this thing pass and get built? Or does he have other plans for the Panama Plaza other than restoring it to its original pedestrian-friendly walkway? I find it hard to believe the later as it destroys one historical thing (the Cabrillo Bridge) as it restores the other.— February 22, 2012 12:45 p.m.

I still enjoy my time with family and friends, but I sure do miss the days when they were there, completely.— February 19, 2012 10:33 a.m.
Plus, it would represent more of the cross-cultural experience, that San Diego offers.— February 18, 2012 5:22 p.m.
You ever consider Geo-caching?— February 9, 2012 8:45 p.m.
For those who remember what happened in Punta Banda, La Bufadora is not the only blow hole in the area.— February 7, 2012 7:16 p.m.
