It’s that time of year when one of San Diego’s top-tier cinematic showcases comes to town. The 24th San Diego Latino Film Festival brings with it, among other things, a return visit from the reigning king of Mexican cinema, Arturo Ripstein, here to host a mini-retrospective capped by his latest crime drama, La Calle de la Amargura (Bleak Street).
The festival runs Thursday, March 16, through Sunday, March 26. For a complete schedule of films and events, 2017.sdlatinofilm.com. To read a few of Scott Marks’s picks to see — including his rave review of Sebastian Cordero’s cold-blooded film noir Sin Muertos No Hay Carnaval (Such Is Life in the Tropics), visit the Big Screen.
