Why club fishing?

Experience, community, conservation

Bay Bass Tournament

Fishing is my life away from the hassle of making a living. Wherever I’ve found myself I’ve found a fishery, whether it was the Colorado or Montana high country, the lakes of north-central Texas, or in my hometown riding my bicycle to Lake Murray to toss Superdupers at trout, or taking a bus to Sunset Cliffs for opaleye fishing with frozen peas.

My first job with a paycheck was decking a sportboat out of 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro. The next year, I found myself working in oil exploration in northern Nevada. I found the fish there, too.

I never joined any clubs, and I have only entered and fished a few kayak tournaments. My work had me on the move a lot. But for those with a more stable job and roots planted, club fishing is the way to go.

First, there is the experience and information that club members share. Then there is the community aspect. In San Diego, there are organizations that charter boats, host lake trips, and sponsor fishing outings for the handicapped.

Another good thing about club fishing is the conservation; most clubs support the effort to maintain and protect fisheries.
