how much longer can i go on

with my mouth full of fire?

oh, i should have passed it on

to someone else long ago

if at the start I'd kissed that man

given him this infernal heat

I'd be a swan..white

a stillness arching in the lake

moving in slow motion

my feet pulling thru the water

below the threshold of your sight

thousands upon thousands

of times i could have spoken out

opened my mouth to let fall the fire

that nestled in every word i uttered

given it freely

to you as i did to another

scorched earth

i could have rolled in the dust

been the she dog mottled and burned

lizard blistered

crinkled skinned cat

with no fair skin to lick

too late these smoldering bones

that lean effect turning and seeking

the air from your grasp

that will breathe me to flames

i am the swan seared to black

icy winds pull feathers from my wings

I'm the night that never expects day

to follow a swallows color

i should have given in

to fire dust and charcoal ash
