Rangers receive Burns from Padres

Cory Burns goes to the Texas Rangers and the San Diego Padres will receive either a player to be named later or cash.

On Wednesday, the San Diego Padres announced that Cory Burns has been traded to the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later or else cash considerations. Burns was dropped from the Padres 40-man roster on November 20th, right before the deadline to set the 40-man ahead of the Rule 5 draft on December 6th in Nashville, Tennessee, directly after the Winter Baseball Meetings there.

The right-handed pitching Burns was designated for assignment when the Padres added right-handed pitcher Adys Portillo and outfielders Yeison Asencio and Jaff Decker to the 40-man roster to protect them from being drafted in the Rule 5. Once a player is designated for assignment, the player is usually placed on waivers within the 10-day limit as governed by the collective bargaining agreement.

Teams can claim a player placed on waivers or the club can choose to try and trade the player instead, within the 10-day window. In all probability, Burns was traded in order to receive some value rather than to have him claimed with nothing in return from the club that claimed him. Baseball executives normally won't indicate what their strategy is in such situations.

A player-to-be-named-later (normally now just referred to as the acronym "PTBNL") is usually selected from a short list of prospects that both clubs agreed to during negotiations, but isn't released publicly for various reasons including minor or major league roster considerations. Cash considerations generally become an alternative option should the club receiving the PTBNL change their opinion of the prospect before coming to the club in the deal.

Cory, 25 years old, appeared in 17 games for the Padres last season, pitching 18 innings in relief and striking out 18 batters while posting a 5.50 earned run average. Burns came to the Padres in a deal with the Cleveland Indians last December, for outfielder Aaron Cunningham.

Notes:

Minor changes - Pat Murphy replaces former AAA Tucson Padres manager Terry Kennedy. Murphy had been the manager at Short-Season Eugene, where the Padres A- affiliate Emeralds play. Bronswell Patrick and Tom Tomincasa have been promoted from within the organization to take over the pitching coach and hitting coach duties in Tucson. The AA San Antonio Missions will continue to try and find a replacement for former Missions manager John Gibbons, who went to the Blue Jays to become their manager. Jim Gabella will now manage the Short-Season Eugene Emeralds after being promoted as manager of the Padres Rookie-Level affiliate in Peoria, Arizona. Michael Collins will manage the Peoria club, coming from the Padres Dominican Summer League club as a first-time manager in 2012.
