damn, that's a nice shot. love the bird in the middle. and i like how the pier's leftward tilt contrasts with the straight lines of the shore and the surf. outside the picture, i can imagine the photographer down on the sand, twisting carefully on the lens to focus, watching it all fall into place, and then snapping away.

Streets and Alleys

Thanks for the shout, gelle! I agree, the movement - be it cars, cats, birds, tree branches - is the star of the show. It's all fun to watch, especially with the natural beauty of the neighborhood as the backdrop. From palm trees to Pacific waves, OB is loaded with an amazing array of eye-pleasing "frames" - which this blog aims to share! As for those criss-crossing streets and alleys, I can't wait to get a view of them from above. Some time in the near future, OB in HD is hoping to get a bird's eye view via helicopter or prop plane. Stay tuned!

OB Vacation = Damnation Station?

Lots of neat words, and strung together nicely. Can't wait for the next installment. But don't be calling OB no "dead-eyed whore," nor "forsaken" neither. If you find yourself making "dead love" in a neighborhood as fine as OB, it ain't the neighborhood that's the problem.

Miscellany

i like your blog. you have a real voice, and that is the whole point of the thing. keep it up. on the street cleaning tip, you have hit on a golden issue. i live in OB, where parking is tight, and street sweepers strike once a week on many streets. Some streets are "no parking" from 7:30am to 10:30am on Wednesday morning or Friday morning. This essentially means you can't park on these streets on the night before, which makes parking even tighter than usual. Why can't the street sweepers wait to come around until 9:30am, when the people who park on the streets have headed off to work? on an unrelated issue, if you have 6 kids and you still want more, you have issues. on health care, we need a national system, like every other major nation. polls show that most Americans agree on this. but somehow we allow our politicians to fail us on this. on spam, if hawaiians like it, it must be all right. because hawaiians are living a lot better than most of us, just on account of being in Hawaiii.

Ah, the good old fish on the back of the car. I'm sure you've seen the version with legs, that says DARWIN in the middle. The other day, on the back of some car on I-5, I saw a new twist...it was a bigger fish eating the DARWIN fish, and the bigger fish said TRUTH in the middle. I was expecting to see a garden-variety elderly zealot behind the wheel, but instead it was a decent-looking twentysomething chick. TRUTH.

You are on to something, auntSDspeaks. I too have been sharply disappointed by Obama's willingness to sign on advisers who made tax "mistakes" that happened to save them tens of thousands of dollars. I thought we had tossed the tax dodgers out of power back in November!

"I wandered into this gem of an establishment" though not an avid hosteler myself, i have heard from avid hostelers that the OB Int'l Hostel is to the average hostel as the San Diego Padres are to the average major league baseball team "what sort of hippie beach trash would be waiting for me" yikes, with that attitude in play, it's the people waiting that i am concerned for "My iphone was giving me trouble" doesn't it have a button for that "I had to find my way up to Bear Mountain to my cousins house" Bear Mountain is a ski resort in the town of Big Bear
