“No show” Fletcher shares intimate DNC moment on TV
I thought I had a fleeting glimpse of Nathan Fletcher and his girlfriend Lorena Gonzalez in the crowd on the floor of the televised Democratic Convention, but I discounted it. I prefer never to think about Nathan, but now the Reader confirms the sighting and weaves a complex tale connecting Paleo Boy with billionaires Irwin Jacobs and three-term NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg and reminds us that Bloomberg had unaccountably endorsed Nathan's failed mayoral bid here in San Diego. It's nothing less than amazing how Nathan Fletcher sheds political labels and still gets around: he reminds me of a male Hillary Clinton. But I'm worried to learn here that he's working in cyber-security. Forget about the "Russians." Could Nathan have hacked those damning DNC emails and got Debbie Wasserman Schultz fired? Has his Jacobs-influenced job as a UCSD lecturer expired? Maybe Nathan wants to be DNC chairman!— July 28, 2016 4:32 p.m.
Never mind Bullock’s — Target is the future of dying malls
Infrastructure could be rebuilt by trimming our immense military budget which funds such amenities as swimming pools at the United States' Incirlik airbase in Turkey. The LA Times recently ran a story describing that well-provisioned and strategic outpost from which we bomb the daylights out of Isis in Syria. But all American dependents have been evacuated from the base since it is is in such a tenuous location and Turkey itself has just thwarted an attempted military coup.— July 27, 2016 10:40 p.m.
SDPD’s evidence integrity spiked by water leaks
Maybe the SDPD needs an intervention by former Real Estate Assets employee turned lobbyist/realtor and developer's representative Marcella Escobar-Eck to obtain a secure and leak-free site for the City's stored evidence. It's stuff that can be central to prosecution of criminal matters, so maybe hiring a knowledgeable high-priced consultant can get the job done.— July 25, 2016 3:18 p.m.
Let them eat steak, Union-Tribune's master proclaims
Disappointed by Union-Tribune editor/publisher Jeff Light's tronc-y remarks about his "legacy media company" (read: old-time newspaper) and its quest for "original content" (read: news stories researched and written by reporters) delivered on many "platforms" (read: probably not newsprint but on-line including computers, i-pads, i-phones, i-watches and using lots of videos.) Pathetic.— July 25, 2016 3:01 p.m.
Lori’s loan
Following the logic of dwbat to a point, it made "no sense" for Senator Bernie Sanders to run for President, as he couldn't "possibly" beat the rigged machinations of a corrupt partisan Democratic National Committee or the millions in dark money of the Clinton PACs. But has it been an "exercise in futility?" I don't think so, and neither do 13 million other voters who have been moved by the overarching message that some battles are worth fighting, win or lose.— July 25, 2016 2:38 p.m.
Crafted to reduce gluten
While this new beer claims to be "reduced" in noxious gluten, I just read the words "gluten-free" on the label of an expensive bottle of shampoo sold in a cool expensive hair salon. I guess it is for the hair of that miniscule number of rich and cool people with celiac disease. (If ever there were a scam bought hook line and sinker by the American people without a peep of nanny-state interference, the "gluten-free" marketing craze is it.)— July 22, 2016 1:21 p.m.
Lori’s loan
Really??? "Stupid?" "Like Carl DeMaio?" Both comments slander Lori Saldana. In this debased political moment of Clinton/Trump, I think Lori Saldana deserves credit and thanks, if not a financial bailout. The truth is that Saldana is intelligent and idealistic. She left the weak and troubled local Democratic party to register as Independent. She is politically experienced, having run and been elected to the State Assembly. And she has courage: Saldana was the ONLY liberal/progressive willing to challenge GOP Mayor Kevin Faulconer in his unobstructed cakewalk to re-election.— July 22, 2016 1:11 p.m.

Since when is the restaurant guy reviewing theater?— July 20, 2016 4:34 p.m.
Should Comic-Con fans stay home?
Fish or cut bait, sir! Apparently we either embrace Big Brother or we live in peril. San Diegans should be grateful there is no Open Carry rule as in Cleveland, Ohio. The Reader seems to want it every-which-way -- planting doubts about public security when thousands of disguised freaks soon will convene for our annual cash cow Comic-Con extravaganza; then complaining about SDPD overkill with helicopters, sniper capability and chemical agent support when Trump was in town; followed by grumbling over nixed FOIA requests to reveal long-secret plans for cops to share surveillance camera video footage taken by local businesses.— July 18, 2016 5:53 p.m.
Amidst Jacobs family crack-ups, can charity prevail?
Surely you won't deny there is a thread of relevant connection between whether there will be sufficient funds to maintain the Irwin Jacobs-financed makeover to Balboa Park after two of his heirs have to divide their money with ex-wives. This story is less sensational than a recent gross Reader review of the Cheescake Factory -- different writer.— July 17, 2016 5:48 p.m.
