Before It Was the Gaslamp: Downtown's Grindhouse Row (updated 8-22-09)
Some things and people still survive in SD, and periodic retro movements by younger generations will enable offbeat but unlikely revivals like the Old Spagetti Factory (which recently replaced the pricey nightholes in the Hard Rock Hotel, resurfacing in almost the same downtown spot where Spag fans flocked for years) and the Chi Chi Club to happen. The city's drive-in theaters are selling out, the single-screen Ken continues world class screenings, bands we listened to 35 years ago play the La Paloma and the Belly Up every week -- the past never really dies, tho it does get recycled every coupla generations. The Reader online articles about the Gaslamp and the Pussycats still get read a bunch each day, and I doubt it's all people my age, so it's not all about nostalgia (That 70s Show on TV was primarily geared for contemporary kids, with guest stars like Alice Cooper and Ted Nugent who transcend generations). So all in all I'd say our generation left its mark, which continues to be seen, heard, and felt everywhere you look - as long as you don't get distracted by sparkly vampires haunting our old hangouts, like the Horton shopping monstrosity and the Hard Rock/Big Money Hotel --

Record Release Roundup
A few updates - U.K. transplant Taz Taylor releases his new album Straight Up on March 27, featuring his self-named band’s new singer Keith Slack, formerly of the Michael Schenker Group (who replaces another MSG vet, Graham Bonnet). Guest players include Don Airey (Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne). Cotton Fever’s release party for their album Tall Tales of the West happens March 28 at Two Roses Tattoo on Logan Avenue. Realcide release their new CD/LP on March 29. The gigaholics of Likewize are holding a release party for their debut album Real Livin’ on April 3, at 710 Beach Club. “I moved out to San Diego because I’m in the Navy and had orders to the USS Nimitz about three years ago,” says bassist Matt Albrecht, who currently serves a shore command at the 32nd street base. Albrecht says the local music scene differs from where he grew up near Austin, Texas. “Instead of beach and reggae music, in Austin you’ll see country rock. The biggest difference is the most popular bands in Austin are local original bands, and in San Diego it’s the cover and tribute bands.” Real Livin’ (self-released by Likewize) contains ten tracks and will be available via MySpace, iTunes,
likewizemusic.net

Record Release Roundup

Before It Was the Gaslamp: Downtown's Grindhouse Row (updated 8-22-09)
Some things and people still survive in SD, and periodic retro movements by younger generations will enable offbeat but unlikely revivals like the Old Spagetti Factory (which recently replaced the pricey nightholes in the Hard Rock Hotel, resurfacing in almost the same downtown spot where Spag fans flocked for years) and the Chi Chi Club to happen. The city's drive-in theaters are selling out, the single-screen Ken continues world class screenings, bands we listened to 35 years ago play the La Paloma and the Belly Up every week -- the past never really dies, tho it does get recycled every coupla generations. The Reader online articles about the Gaslamp and the Pussycats still get read a bunch each day, and I doubt it's all people my age, so it's not all about nostalgia (That 70s Show on TV was primarily geared for contemporary kids, with guest stars like Alice Cooper and Ted Nugent who transcend generations). So all in all I'd say our generation left its mark, which continues to be seen, heard, and felt everywhere you look - as long as you don't get distracted by sparkly vampires haunting our old hangouts, like the Horton shopping monstrosity and the Hard Rock/Big Money Hotel --— April 11, 2009 7:40 p.m.

Record Release Roundup
A few updates - U.K. transplant Taz Taylor releases his new album Straight Up on March 27, featuring his self-named band’s new singer Keith Slack, formerly of the Michael Schenker Group (who replaces another MSG vet, Graham Bonnet). Guest players include Don Airey (Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne). Cotton Fever’s release party for their album Tall Tales of the West happens March 28 at Two Roses Tattoo on Logan Avenue. Realcide release their new CD/LP on March 29. The gigaholics of Likewize are holding a release party for their debut album Real Livin’ on April 3, at 710 Beach Club. “I moved out to San Diego because I’m in the Navy and had orders to the USS Nimitz about three years ago,” says bassist Matt Albrecht, who currently serves a shore command at the 32nd street base. Albrecht says the local music scene differs from where he grew up near Austin, Texas. “Instead of beach and reggae music, in Austin you’ll see country rock. The biggest difference is the most popular bands in Austin are local original bands, and in San Diego it’s the cover and tribute bands.” Real Livin’ (self-released by Likewize) contains ten tracks and will be available via MySpace, iTunes, likewizemusic.net, and CDs sold at shows.
