Avatar
Same here, Jay. I didn't expect to like it, but I loved Avatar even more for the messages it conveys than for the elaborate visual orgy that it is. (For the few remaining Avatar virgins reading this, spend the extra few bucks and see it in 3D.) Cameron's bringing some critical wisdom to a mass audience in a format that grabs and holds their ADDled attention, without coming off as didactic and preachy. It's a very important film that could prove to be a real shaping influence on the psyches of young people who are sorely missing the type of life instruction that fairy tales used to provide. I'll stop myself from running amok on the topic of fairy tales here, since Bruno Bettelheim's already written that classic. http://www.alibris.com/booksearch?qwork=6969212&m… Avatar is, of course, a fairy tale. There's certainly nothing original about the story, and even Cameron will never have enough money to pay royalties to all those who could stake a legitimate claim. With regard to screen epics in which our hero "goes native," it reminds me of "Dances with Wolves" more than anything else. I also felt that the general worldview common to native aboriginal peoples was very well represented, either because Cameron really "gets it" himself, or due to some savvy consultants. In fact, the most moving moment of the film for me was early on, when Neytiri kills an animal in order to save the blundering, clueless Jake. Her deep sense of regret, her concern and respect for the animal were right on. I don't recall seeing that given attention in a film before, and Cameron got it exactly right. I was stunned. Even more easily recognizable were some distinctly Asian themes. For example saw the "empty cup" of Zen, with Neytiri as teacher, Jake as student. http://www.prairiewindzen.org/emptying_your_cup.h…— February 12, 2010 10:43 a.m.
One More Furlong
This is a really interesting blog, refried. Probably the most educational thing I've ever read about horse racing. Perhaps you have a second career as an instructor at the Learning Annex. :) (Come to think of it, that really might be one HOT-selling course! You should pitch it!)— February 10, 2010 8:56 p.m.

Used to have them when I lived in Arizona. I like the peachy-apricot orange ones with the hot pink centers. http://www.phoenixtropicals.com/canaryHibiscus.jpg— February 9, 2010 11:14 p.m.
