National hotel lobby funded wage referendum
Todd Gloria has said in the past that well over 60% of the voters are in favor of raising the minimum wage, but we won't know that until it gets on the ballot--in 2016. Had this been on the ballot when originally proposed (like it was supposed to be) and the support was truly this strong, the wage hike would now be law and no referendum could change it. Perhaps the people that wanted to bypass the ballot box miscalculated?— November 6, 2014 12:01 p.m.
White-knuckle descent
Mountains to the North and East? Sure--many miles away. Mexico to the South? Sure--about 8-10 miles. Pretty intense tailwinds to the West? Sure--but don't planes usually land into the wind? I always thought the main problems were the building and hills just to the east of the runway, making the first part of the runway useless for landings in the usual east to west direction.— November 5, 2014 9:57 p.m.
Qualcomm in the House
Wonder where Jess Durfee was sitting. I have season seats in Club Level section 7, and they are $30 per ticket. Was he in the City Box? If so, those tickets are grossly undervalued.— November 5, 2014 9:48 p.m.
Runaway train prompts need for brakeman
Which makes me wonder if any maintenance is being done at all on the line right now. I would think not, since no freight is moving on that part of the line.— November 2, 2014 12:09 p.m.
Runaway train prompts need for brakeman
Driving out to Phoenix last week, I caught a look at the tracks out near Jacumba and in the desert. However much money they spent to clear the tracks will have to be spent again, as the tracks have been covered in spots again by brush and sand. I think the line could be a benefit by running freight to the east and connect with the UP in El Centro, but not with the outfit who is currently in charge.— November 1, 2014 4:30 p.m.
Rams most likely to go to L.A.
DAMN! I was out of town last week, so I missed this story. Here is what I have heard will be happening just after the Super Bowl this year. 1) The Rams will announce they are leaving St Louis for LA. This is pretty much a forgone conclusion in the St Louis area. Stan Kroenke (Rams owner) has purchased 60 acres in Inglewood between the now-closed Hollywood Park racetrack and the Forum. He is apparently more than willing to build his own stadium, but he doesn't want to share it with another team. How the NFL would deal with that is unclear. 2) The Raiders have put the city of Oakland on notice. Mark Davis wants to see plans for a new stadium in Oakland, or the Raiders are leaving. Not for LA, but for San Antonio. The Alamodome is available, it's already a much better stadium than the Oakland Coliseum ever was, and San Antonio has apparently already committed to building a new stadium should the Raiders move there. Which leaves--3) The San Diego Chargers, and the sound of crickets. They don't know what to do. They have said they will try to block any team from moving to "their territory" (LA), but the NFL will probably tell them too bad--it's good for the league to have a team there. Since Kroenke doesn't want to share his stadium, any other team moving there would have to have another stadium built for them, unless the NFL can convince him it would be better for the league if he did, and the NFL, money talks. In the meantime, the Chargers have backed themselves into a corner by waiting until 2016 to put whatever stadium proposal they have on the ballot, and without any new stadium planned for them in the LA area, the Chargers are stuck. Of course, the NFL is so hot to put a team in London--the London Chargers maybe?— October 30, 2014 9:08 a.m.
Borrego: build a home, lose a farm
I see looking under golf courses for Borrego Springs that 5 are shown, and none of them are named Rams Hill. So if Rams Hill reopens, why in the world would there be at least 5 courses in Borrego? It's obviously not because there is a demand for them--I've played 3 of the courses over the years, and, let's just say that reservations were not necessary.— October 29, 2014 7:09 p.m.
Double-tracked = doubly jacked in North County
It should be double-tracked all the way to LA from San Diego.— October 27, 2014 4:15 p.m.
U-T San Diego circulation drops
Don: As I asked on the U-T website, how much TOT revenue will be generated for San Diego for a hotel in Austin? Perhaps Dougie should just print a large banner and have a plane tow it around San Diego saying, "I am building a hotel in Austin". Who the hell (except for Dougie) really cares?— October 25, 2014 9:41 p.m.
