Qualcomm surely worth more than $70 a share
The question is if Broadcomm is willing to raise the ante. Most of these takeover proposals of this scale and in this industry are just opening gambits. (Sorry for the poker and chess metaphors.) I'd suspect that much more negotiating/fighting will occur before this is ended. It is interesting to speculate what the stock would be trading for if there had not been the Apple dispute and the fines levied overseas.— November 14, 2017 4:27 p.m.
Qualcomm surely worth more than $70 a share
I'm in agreement with you about the Jacobs family and the political meddling. A change of corporate status of the local Qualcomm operations would not guarantee an end to that family and its buying and selling of politicians. In fact, it might make it worse in that none of them would be "distracted" with the running of the corporation. I would expect the clan to continue to live here and keep spending their money to buy influence.— November 14, 2017 4:22 p.m.
Lovejoy and McDavid guilty of attempted murder
Good ol' Brad wins some and also loses some. McDavid's attorney was grasping at straws. While it is never a sure thing, this case doesn't look as if it offers up much in grounds for appeal.— November 14, 2017 4:12 p.m.
Error alleged in Rancho Bernardo High baseball
That school has more than its share of scandals. After a few visits there, many years ago, I decided to never return. The students were obnoxious and the teachers didn't seem to know what to do about it. In its first nine years of operation, starting in 1989, the school had four principals, and was on the fifth one at the start of its tenth year. That's a strong indication of something being seriously amiss. The kid/parents will get a fat settlement out of this suit. And the record of the baseball coach is now tarnished. But is getting rough the way he turned out all those wins and pro prospects? It probably was.— November 14, 2017 8:04 a.m.
Lovejoy and McDavid guilty of attempted murder
This was a story of extreme stupidity. Two adults now have their lives cut short, and likely will never enjoy freedom again. Her fainting was a rational thing, given that she just got the news that will put her in a prison cell in Chowchilla or some other fun spot for many, many years. Jurors were quoted after court ended, and commented on the unbelievable testimony of McDavid.— November 14, 2017 7:58 a.m.
New: Mexican/Baja 1000 Off-Road Walk of Fame
And those tiles are missing because?— November 13, 2017 6:55 p.m.
Transplanted Minnesotan's daily TJ hair show
It's likely something bad will happen to him in TJ and he'll be eager to return to the USA.— November 13, 2017 1:42 p.m.
Amazon Go in Encinitas no forgone conclusion
Would that hard-to-access location with its limited and weird parking make any better location for Amazon Go than it was for Whole Paycheck? If there was any location in the county more suited for Whole Foods, I can't think of where it would have been. But the devil is in the details, and that site just didn't work. I guess we'll see if this is going to happen or not.— November 12, 2017 3:48 p.m.
Case of alleged assassin and cheating wife with jury
These stories that are concocted to talk their way out of situations are most creative. They went to all that planning and preparation to lure Mulvihill out there to do what? Embarrass him? Really. And we have one defendant bragging that if he had shot to kill, he would not have missed. You cannot make this stuff up! Actually, it was a fairly sophisticated set-up, and it might have worked if the target had been killed. However, it was going to require the murder of two men, not one, for that to work. The defense was desperate when it called the defendant to testify; that usually is a very bad move. But with what they had to work with, desperate times called for desperate measures. So, the jury has it. When it comes to juries, ya' just nevah know.— November 10, 2017 9:54 a.m.
Disposal of nuclear waste: think Camp Pendleton
Looking for simple answers to this matter is tempting, but will not get it solved. Actually, the current situation cannot be "solved" at all. Containing it is the best you can hope for. That spent fuel/waste will be highly radioactive and dangerous for 100,000 years and beyond. Because of that, it is impossible for humans at our current stage of development to store such stuff in a way that cannot possibly cause degradation. The plan for Yucca Mountain in Nevada is fairly well developed. Is it the perfect spot for storing this radioactive mess? No, it is not. But I've not heard or seen anything about a better spot. Part of the plan was to construct many, many miles of a brand-new railroad into Yucca mountain that would avoid hauling through Las Vegas and other population centers, although I have a hard time imagining why shipping it is such a dangerous proposition. Before that plan can go forward, a big dose of political will is needed, and the affected states cannot be allowed to block it. State-by-state storage locations would be, at best, temporary storage sites. When/if some better place to stash the radioactive waste can be found, or some other means of disposal, then it could be moved out of those locations. Whatever we do with it, we are kicking the can down the road, and leaving it to future generations to deal with.— November 10, 2017 8:15 a.m.
