Trump blocks hostile Qualcomm takeover
What you say may be the case, but after the Marines spent all those years and $ billions developing the V-22, now the Air Farce wants some of them. That's handy because the AF doesn't have to go back and reimburse the sister service for a share of all that development cost. I've heard that that Osprey design, or something very similar, may just supplant all the cargo choppers in military use within a generation.— March 15, 2018 4:24 p.m.
Bridgepoint splits company
This is just one of many episodes of the unwinding of the for-profit education mill industry. The word does finally get out, and when the president of the newest veterans organization of Afghanistan and Iraq veterans said that BS was a fraud, it didn't help them get veterans to come flocking. The word does get out, and things adjust. This won't put the for-profit fraudsters out of business, but they sure don't have a growth industry any more. Trump hasn't bailed them out, De Vos won't be able to do it singlehandedly, etc. It's about time!— March 15, 2018 4:13 p.m.
Dodge Ram trucks stolen for their Cummins motors
I'd have a higher opinion of those Cummins diesel engines in Dodge trucks if they weren't so NOISY.— March 14, 2018 8:37 a.m.
None
This whole story is something that could come only out of Chula Vista or a neighboring city. The politicians in So County can be so stupid that it defies description.— March 12, 2018 8:11 p.m.
Will the fall of Jacobs starve Faulconer?
Don't expect much to change on that front. The Jacobs clan is rejoicing that the Prez has scuttled the Broadcom takeover. And that rejoicing may just energize them to get even more meddlesome in local politics and local matters like the Park. Actually the recent events will leave the Jacobs familia more time, energy and ego drive to get into things they never bothered with before. You have not seen, heard, or read the last of them.— March 12, 2018 8:07 p.m.
Yanni got $102,000 for a classic Porsche
Two rich guys are fighting about a toy. A car that is nearly fifty years old has had many years to accumulate wounds. Yanni says it was in "good condition." For a hundred grand you get a car in "good condition?" My take is that Roper is on the right side, but that he should have physically inspected the car before buying it. That's called "due diligence." He wasn't diligent.— March 12, 2018 6:16 p.m.
Trump blocks hostile Qualcomm takeover
Told ya' that might happen. I should have said it would go down that way, 'cause that was just what I expected. But, hey, Paul Jacobs is gone from Qualcomm and it looks as if Mollenkopf is out or severely wounded. Could this be a new beginning for Qualcomm, one where the corporation stops abusing the H-1B program (which is an abuse in and of itself) and gets out of local politics, and starts to be a better corporate citizen? So, Trump did the right thing this time, didn't he, Don? His motives may have been other than the best, and maybe Navarro was behind the whole thing. But it is dead, dead, dead.— March 12, 2018 5:37 p.m.
Airbnb forcing you out?
While I don't live in Oceanside, I do reside not far away. I can't ever imagine wanting to live in that city. Oh, and I worked in Oceanside a couple times. It needs all the help it can get, but with the various gang dominated neighborhoods, dysfunctional city council, third-rate police force, and general shortage of tax revenue producing businesses, it has a steep, high hill to climb. Maybe the rest of the county is getting so crowded and hard to access that Oceanside will benefit from the spillover, and parts will actually prosper.— March 10, 2018 9:26 a.m.
Woman accused of looting Bonsall home during fire
If this is the worst case of looting that came out of that fire, the victims got off easily. The charges appear to be motivated by a desire to show zero tolerance for any kind of looting, and she is going to be an example. An old barbecue and a (probably) old umbrella are hardly worth the prosecutorial time and expense. What was SHE thinking when she stole (or appropriated) them? But with that law that treats theft by looting a home during a declared emergency on the books, what would be a rather minor misdemeanor rises to a serious felony. Aw shucks.— March 10, 2018 9:15 a.m.
Will the fall of Jacobs starve Faulconer?
This change at Qualcomm is is most significant. It should and probably does represent the final break with Jacobs family dominance of the corporation. Paul Jacobs just never had the presence or persona of his dad. But as to the effect it will have on that family and its meddling in local politics is less clear. In fact, Paul Jacobs, no longer distracted by his duties at Qualcomm, could get even more active in buying cooperative politicians. The family wealth will not be diminished because of his departure. In fact if the Broadcom deal goes though, it will add to their fortune, at least in the short term. Until now, it was not clear where the corporation ended and the family started when it came to political favors. Now it will be crystal clear if it is the business or the Jacobs family. What happens with Faulconer and Fletcher and others may change, or not. And how about granddaughter Sarah, and her congressional ambitions? If the family tries to buy the election for her, in the guise that she can use her own funds freely, it can spend far more than any other candidate, and scarcely feel it. Things will change, but just how they will change is open to speculation.— March 10, 2018 9:08 a.m.
