Yanni got $102,000 for a classic Porsche

But English buyer says it is a clunker

1971 Porsce 911. Philip Yanni sold a 1971 Porsche 911s to a wealthy Englishman, Timothy Andrew Roper.
1971 Porsce 911. Philip Yanni sold a 1971 Porsche 911s to a wealthy Englishman, Timothy Andrew Roper.

Poway resident Philip Yanni is a software entrepreneur and a classic car enthusiast, who sat on the board of the Riverside International Automotive Museum until it closed in 2016. Over the Internet, he sold a 1971 Porsche 911s to a wealthy Englishman, Timothy Andrew Roper. Yanni said the car was in good condition.

According to a fraud suit filed March 7 in federal court, Roper says Yanni is a bit of a fibber. “It was immediately apparent that the car had been involved in a major frontal collision,” says Roper’s suit. The damaged car “was in effect an insurance write-off that had been superficially repaired.” Roper thinks the collision might have taken place after the car had been reportedly restored. Roper wants three times compensatory damages of $142,000.

Yanni initially responded to Roper’s complaints, but then stopped replying, says the suit. I tried to reach Yanni by phone and email, but got no response.

Two rich guys are fighting about a toy. A car that is nearly fifty years old has had many years to accumulate wounds. Yanni says it was in "good condition." For a hundred grand you get a car in "good condition?" My take is that Roper is on the right side, but that he should have physically inspected the car before buying it. That's called "due diligence." He wasn't diligent.

Yes, car inspections are widely available from reputable auto mechanics. The amount charged is worth it.

dwbat: Roper had the car inspected after it arrived in England. You have a point: he could have paid to have it inspected by a so-called neutral party in San Diego. On the other hand, he may have felt there was no neutral party in the area. Best, Don Bauder

Too early car for Carfax. Must have a 17 digit VIN which began in 1981.

The seller, by the way, is not related to the famous Greek composer Yanni, whose real name is Yiannis Chryssomallis.
