No comments, please, we’re SDSU
Sad, and typical of many universities. The admin and faculty claim to want dialogue, but actually avoid it. They speak, you listen and keep quiet in their model. I have had a similar situation with a different large university not far from here. Its "journalistic" effort to keep in touch with alumni suppresses bad news, even when it might be of intense interest to the alumni. That school referred to the mission of the alumni publication as "supporting excellence." Gee, I thought it would have been to inform, and then let the readers reach their own conclusions. Little did I know. SDSU undoubtedly proclaims its "transparency", yet trying to learn about the true state of affairs on that campus is nearly impossible. If transparency is like looking at the world through muddy water, SDSU has it in spades.— April 26, 2017 3:40 p.m.
Aryan Brotherhood murderer Elliott Scott Grizzle sues county over solitary confinement
Anyone else like me who wonders how he'll fare in the joint? I know there are white, black, Hispanic, etc. gangs in prisons that watch out for each other. But heading to some max or medium-security joint with a reputation as a white supremacist, and having no prospect of coming out alive, must be terrifying. That is unless he's convinced himself that he's invincible. But some overweight dude thinks that, he's nuts. I'd say his prospects are very poor.— April 25, 2017 4:40 p.m.
High Tech High to take over Horizon Christian Academy Clairemont site
If San Diego Unified actually has an administrator who "oversees" the charter schools that were chartered by the district, it's a step in the right direction. Most districts that charter a school walk away from it, washing their hands of any subsequent problems. The laws in California that govern the operation of charter schools "require" the chartering district to maintain oversight. Few do anything close to that. And for that reason, many charters turn out to be a racket that sucks up educational dollars while underpaying teachers and overpaying administrators, or corporations that run them. The whole picture of charter schools in this state is a mess, cries out for reform, and sullies the charter schools that really are there to educate.— April 25, 2017 8:59 a.m.
In new book, Filner admits his sex addiction, mistakes
There are inconsistencies in his story. He was power hungry he admits, but while a congressman, for many terms, did very little to lead the way. Haven't we heard that he actually never introduced a piece of legislation, or at least one that passed and become law? He's been accused of telling Filipino war veterans repeatedly he was "fighting" for them and for redress for having been forgotten, yet never accomplished a thing. He had become a professional politician, and enjoyed that for too long.— April 25, 2017 7:46 a.m.
KOGO Radio financial stock tout arrested in Utah
Don, Your post raised another matter and that was Cooper claiming to be an Eagle Scout and presumably a Marine. If he was a member of the LDS church, he might well have been an Eagle Scout, since that church makes Boy Scouting a big part of its program for youth. But, a Marine? I wonder. Plenty of people like to claim to be veterans of one sort or another when they are not. We've had some really egregious examples of that over the years. But I'd guess that if he was a phony in one way, he might have been a phony in many other ways, such as making bogus claims of prior accomplishments.— April 23, 2017 9:15 a.m.
KOGO Radio financial stock tout arrested in Utah
Would it be possible to ask KOGO, or any of the many other stations, if it has taken steps to insure that their financial guru programs are legit? I've listened to so many of them for many years on weekends, and they all seem to sound about the same. Milquetoast is the word I'd use to describe most of them. Apparently I missed out on the best of them, including Total Wealth Management, and never wanted to employ them. BTW, I do use a financial management firm for some of our holdings, but I still self-manage even more of it. That firm charges plenty, whereas my cost is nil. The danger is if I become demented, make bad moves, and nobody sees it until the damage is done. But if that happens, I'll never know it happened, so why worry?— April 22, 2017 7:44 p.m.
USS Bennington oak grove now on Balboa Park map
Those sailors who died in the tragedy were buried in the Army's post cemetery at Fort Rosecrans. There is a tall memorial (obelisk) at the site that memorializes their demise. If you visit the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, it is hard to miss the Bennington memorial. But I'd never heard of this grove before. How short our memories can be. As to a Medal of Honor for Turpin, it is unlikely. Those are reserved for those whose heroism is on the field of battle. But he may deserve another sort of medal given for those whose efforts save the lives of others, the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. It, like the Army's Soldiers Medal, honors those whose efforts saved the lives of others, but in not battle situations. Isn't this city, like it or not, just loaded with military history?— April 20, 2017 9:04 p.m.
He didn't pay taxes, then fled before trial
May we assume that those three-or-so years of custody will count toward the 102-month sentence? That's the usual way of doing things.— April 20, 2017 2:27 p.m.
Mother’s milk
So, his money buys a walk in the academic procession, huh? More appropriate would be a perp walk into the court house. He's a poster boy for selective prosecution, political clout, and local corruption.— April 19, 2017 8:41 p.m.
Deep state GOP justice?
Gag!— April 19, 2017 3:07 p.m.
