Seize control of that stadium land
San Diegans need to be very skeptical of anything that those three propose. If Soccer City is/was a land grab, theirs is one, too. Oh, they are allies of SDSU, or so they proclaim. But so far SDSU seems ambivalent at best about any of the proposals. SDSU would love to get the entire property, free of course, and develop it for anything and everything. Coughing up $5K apiece is really just pocket change for the three. Let's see how much they are willing to spend to influence the reuse of the land in total, and then we will understand just how much they hope to benefit. They're not doing this out of charitable impulses, not those sharks.— August 3, 2017 8:11 a.m.
San Diego cop worried she might have miscarriage, blamed for late notice
The largest hick town PD in the US has always had excuses for its difficulty in recruiting sworn personnel. The usual and perpetual reason has been money, and I'm talking from over 40 years of watching the circus. But is it money? The "leadership" of the department has been dismal over the years. There were "Keystone Bill" Kolender, Burgreen, Sanders, and then this sorry Lansdowne. And now the city may have the worst one of all. It's no picnic trying to find a capable chief, but it should not be impossible. This is, after all, San Diego, with all its allure, best-in-the-continental-US climate, with sunshine and water everywhere. No, when they get a capable chief and a staff of strong upper management, and still have all this difficulty with recruiting, I'll listen. Oh, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I don't have to live inside the SD city limits.— July 30, 2017 12:24 p.m.
District Attorney yet to file charges against former Poway Schools chief
Can we say "sinecure", boys and girls?— July 28, 2017 8:36 p.m.
District Attorney yet to file charges against former Poway Schools chief
You are bringing the matter into focus. Bahnee D doesn't/didn't go looking for corrupt politicians to take down, even though there were many. One exception was the So County school district cases when the conduct was so outrageous that she had to do something. (Or had the Atty Gen threatened to take it over if local efforts were not forthcoming?) But after filing nearly 300 counts, including many felonies, involving 15 perps, she went wobbly on it, and let them off lightly. This case is different, in that it involves Poway, which has a super-high opinion of itself and its schools. Why, it had the best supe in the state, didn't they? His wildly elevated pay proved it. But it may just be the situation that the case of criminal conduct isn't all that strong, and his behavior wasn't the flagrant type. So, letting this one slide may be the best all-round strategy for the old boys/girls club at the DA's office.— July 24, 2017 4:19 p.m.
Man whose home is metal box in Vista park admits drug sales
So, he'll get from two to six years of custody, which equals "three hots and a cot" every day, plus medical care. That, at his age, may be more attractive than staying in the shipping container.— July 23, 2017 10:39 a.m.
Lawrence Isen knows white-collar crime
Don, The Swiss caved in a few years ago, and now "rat out" any/all of their US domiciled depositors to the IRS. Any US citizen should avoid Swiss banks in any shape or form.— July 22, 2017 5:48 p.m.
Butkiewicz gets free ride on Teamsters deal
Alex, since you rarely pay a complement in your comments, I'll have to give your opinion some weight. Actually Jerry looks like, and his history suggests, union boss, with most or all of the usual negative connotations. A few years ago, I would laugh when those who were defending the crooks in the So County school districts would refer to "teachers union bosses." No such thing in that profession, but here locally, we have had bosses, and the best example would be Mickey "The Bat" K, mentioned in the story. But I have a question that will go unanswered: does Jerry sometimes have second thoughts about mentoring the lovely Lorena in her career? Of late she hasn't exactly been a credit to the labor unions or to her district.— July 22, 2017 4:46 p.m.
Speed limits to be lowered on La Costa Avenue, Quail Gardens Drive
That method of determining proper speed limits has to do with the study of statistics, i.e. the "normal" distribution. Without going into detail, it assumes most drivers don't go "too fast" for the conditions. For a long time, I've questioned that assumption, and have favored some sort of model that employs many variables affecting traffic to set the speed limit. But nobody asked me what I think.— July 22, 2017 4:25 p.m.
Syrian refugees ask for money at Escondido Albertson's
Perhaps low cost-of-living areas are not very tolerant or welcoming. Then there is the matter of climate. Desert dwellers may not fare well in northerly climes.— July 22, 2017 4:19 p.m.
Lawrence Isen knows white-collar crime
There were many different stories. In some cases the violators were unwitting due to having been beneficiaries of trusts or inheritors of accounts set up by others. Some stashed cash while working overseas. Others knew better, but were reassured by the bankers that Swiss secrecy was inviolate and would be fools not to have such funds and ignore the tax consequences. So there were degrees of guilt.— July 21, 2017 9:08 p.m.
