End of the Line was a seminal early 1990s hardcore band featuring members of art punk band Antioch Arrow and Heroin (an early example of screamo, a punk subgenre), who were both signed to hardcore/emo label Gravity Records, home of Angel Hair and Mohinder. The label was largely responsible for putting San Diego on the map in the mid-1990s as one of the centers of the emo/screamo and post-hardcore movement. Citing influences such as Say No More, Void, Struggle, Fugazi, Faith, Undertow, SSD, Downcast, Media Children, Bl’ast!, and Lawbreaker, End of the Line members included guitarist Matt Anderson, guitarist Scott Bartoloni, and drummer Aaron Montaigne (all three still playing at the time with Heroin), alongside singer Cory Linstrum.
Although they were only extant for around eight months together in summer 1991 and had only recorded three sample tracks, they were courted by multiple record companies, including Vermiform, who offered a seven-inch deal. They were eventually signed by Ebullition for an album that was released in 1991. They played around dozen shows, sharing stages with Aspirin Feast, Say No More, Struggle, Undertow, Downcast, Media Children, and Blatz (among others), as well as opening a Born Against/Rorschach show.
Even as their album was about to be released, Heroin (with Anderson, Bartoloni, and Montaigne) was preparing its own new full-length and would soon be leaving on tour. Singer Cory Linstrum would soon relocate to the Bay Area to front John Henry West and become a music historian, writing album liner notes and articles for magazines like Ugly Things, Human Being Lawnmower, and his self-published fanzine Savage Damage Digest. End of the Line made its final appearance in September 1991, opening for Fugazi and Jawbreaker.
The self-titled End of the Line LP was re-released by Three One G Records in summer 2022, remixed and remastered by Tim Green (Nation Of Ulysses, The Fucking Champs) at LOUDER studios. The reissue was pressed on limited edition color vinyl with a 3D cover and accompanying individually printed 3D glasses. Three One G also produced a new music video for the track "Burning Down."
End of the Line and Santa Barbara’s Downcast, who were both on the Ebullition label and last played together in 1992, are hooking up for a pair of June dates in San Diego and Los Angeles, at the Che Café on June 13 and Los Angeles’s Oblivion on June 14. For End of the Line, these will be the first live dates that they've played in 34 years. San Diego band Three Moments of an Explosion will be opening both events.
