Weird start for O.B. bar under new ownership

"One guy even stuck his finger in our drinks."

"They brought out some Gallagher’s T-shirts and started screaming at us, ‘First boob out gets a free shirt!’"

On April 28, Eugene Gallagher hosted a farewell party at his Newport Avenue pub. The next day, after 11 years, he handed over the keys to new owner Steve Yeng, a local who also owns the O.B. Noodle House and Bar 1502.

On April 29, Rachelle Ryder (not her real name) and two female friends parked in front of Gallagher’s sometime between 9:30 and 10:00 p.m. “We saw some people at the door,” said Ryder. “I’d never been to Gallagher’s before so I couldn’t tell if they were open or closed. I asked this guy at the window and he waved us in.”

What they found once they got inside was one slow Friday with less than ten people.

“We were confused as we sat down because some of the guys that we assumed were bartenders started talking to us,” said Ryder. “Then a few of them started singing this song, repeating the same lyric over and over: ‘tits for the boys.’ Then all six of them joined in singing the same song and feeding us some of the shittiest drinks I’ve ever tasted. One guy even stuck his finger in our drinks. This is when I decided that none of the guys were actually bartenders.”

About 15 minutes later, Ryder said four other girls were let into the bar.

“Things continued to get weirder and weirder,” said Ryder, “when they brought out some Gallagher’s T-shirts and started screaming at us, ‘First boob out gets a free shirt!’

“It was at this point that it felt like everything was taking a bad turn, so we finished our drinks so we could leave. The whole time they just kept singing at us to show our tits. Then all of a sudden, one of the guys kicked all us girls out. I gave one of the guys my credit card to pay for the drinks but he just threw it back at me and instead tried to give us more drinks. I just wanted to pay and get out of there….

“As we left, one of them started screaming at us to not come back without our areola…. It was literally the most uncomfortable experience of my life. We next headed to Sunshine [Company] for a couple of drinks. When we came out 45 minutes later, we saw tons of people at Gallagher’s.”

When shown some photos from April 30 at Gallagher’s under the new ownership, Ryder said some of the guys in the photos were there on April 29.

On May 2, I spoke with Mark of O.B. Noodle House/Bar 1502 about the incident. “I talked to the guys that were there,” he said. “A couple of guys went over to Gallagher’s earlier that day to clean it up. They started drinking and inviting friends and coworkers.”

As far as the incident with Ryder, he said, “I find it hard to believe. We did kick people out of there that didn’t belong. A friend of theirs came in that wasn’t allowed by saying that her friends were inside. I think they made the whole thing up. Also, the police stopped by that night to question the guys about what had happened.”

Mark also indicated that the guys who were there that night were disciplined by the owner.

Ryder said, “I got a call from Steve [owner of O.B. Noodle House], he apologized profusely for that night and offered free visits to O.B. Noodle for me and my friends. I also heard it through the grapevine that one of the guys got fired or suspended pending termination. The one they fired wasn’t even the one that was making all of the titty comments.”

What’s planned for Gallagher’s future? “I’m not sure,” Mark said. “I think we’re going to run it as Gallagher’s through the summer and then do a remodel. We're also going to try some new bands and move toward more reggae music.” When it comes to a new name, “The Holding Company” is one possibility being kicked around.

As a bystandered in that bar at the time I think this story has been completely blown out of proportion. As a reporter you shouldn't make a story based on the events shared by a few intoxicated individuals. This bar was an awesome spot when Eugene Gallagher ran it and now has amazing potential to be bigger with Steve owning it. Before we go bashing its reputation it would be very wise to make sure all the facts are on the table. Please remember that Bar 1502 won the episode of Barmageddon, so it seems to me that it is run without needing the help of Jon Taffer. At the end of the day the truth needs to be shared that those events are completely false so an innocent individual and his staff don't face repercussions that could be quite damaging for all involved.

This is a chincy article. Julie Stalmer stop hating on OB, reference to previous headline "Crappy Earth Day, Ocean Beach". Next time some anonymous girl wants some lime light, inform her that running her drunken mouth about the incident at Sunshine company isn't in her best interest. She came into sunshine and was drunkinly rants about how she doesn't need to know what an Old Fashioned is in order to bartend. I asked her what she was so mad about and it seemed like the guys at gallagher's laughed at her when she asked for a bar tending gig and didn't know basic drinks. The girl I spoke to, Diane or Diana, said she works only a couple of lousy day shifts at beachcomber in mission beach and doesn't make any money. I told her to be stoked to have a job, and being so young she could work her way up like most people, she told me to f**k off and that they would get what's coming to them. She was trying to make herself seem like bartender of the year while bashing the Comber, which I love, & Gallagher's. She is what's wrong with the youth these days. I will be avoiding the beachcomber since they have ungrateful young girls talking a lot of trash about stuff they don't know.

RE rebuttal comments, I'd counter that this was a newsworthy incident, well-covered here, with both customer and operator given the opportunity to present their differing POVs. I don't see it as "hating on OB" - even when noting where it took place, the reporter just says Newport Avenue. The only reference to OB is unavoidable, due to it being the name of a related business, OB Noodle House.

An Irish bar run by Steve Yeng just ain't gonna make it. Maybe he should change the name to Yeng Yangs Titty Bar.

I was one of four girls in Gallagher's Friday night when this happened. First things first is that none of the three girls that were friends seemed uncomfortable or unhappy to be there. Originally two girls were in there while a few guys behind the bar could be seen/heard singing into a microphone. I immediately stopped peeked over the patio window and watched. Next thing I know is a girl comes up right next to me and says her friends are in there. Then one of the two girls in there comes to the door and opens it. Myself and the other girl walk right in and sit at the bar with the two other girls. The guys behind the bar at this time are still laughing amongst themselves and talking into the microphone. The two girls that had been there before us had drinks in front of them and said they were having a blast. In fact the one girl who opened the door said "Hey, it's free so drink on their tab, who cares?" I was offered a shot and by the time my shot was placed in front of me one of the other guys jokingly said, "Show us your boobs if you want that shot." Yes, it was said to me and no one else. I laughed and jokingly replied "well here!" I pretended to pull my V-neck shirt down and the next thing I know Steve comes in. Steve took the microphone and said that he appreciated us stopping by, but a job had to be done so check them out tomorrow night. The three girls walked out before me and I walked out with Steve. At no time did anyone say come back with your areolas. The only problem those three seemed to have was that they were asked to leave without being allowed to finish their drinks. They stood outside for a good five minutes complaining about how they weren't finished drinking. That to me doesn't sound like a group of girls being verbally harassed. The next day "Diana" posted on a Facebook group about the incident. I immediately tried to correct the situation by stating it was untrue, but that wasn't before over seventy-five comments told her to seek legal action, go to the news station or how they will boycott OB Noodle or Bar 1502. As the only girl asked to show her boobs I think this is a joke. Everyone around had a few drinks and nothing said to me was taken seriously. I don't feel this story is hating on OB, but I feel that not all sides were equally defended. At the end of the day a minor incident was blown out of proportion. What I would like to remind everyone is that Steve is an amazing person who gives back to the community of Ocean Beach. He has donated hours of his time to events, donated money to Ocean Beach Elementary for supplies, and donated money to events in Ocean Beach like our 4th of July firework show. He is about building relationships, giving back and most of all having a good time. Let's just see what he does with his new business venture!
