Playas de Rosarito police discovered two young girls murdered in their home in the evening of Wednesday, March 20th. The victims, 7 and 9 year old sisters, were found gagged with tape and hung by rope. The 45 year old mother, Claudia Álvarez, was found dead nearby in the family’s home.

Municipal authorities were initially hesitant to give local media any motive behind the murders, but later stated they believe the mother killed the children and then herself.

Mexico needs stricter gun laws to prevent this sort of violence... oh, wait, sorry, I got confused about with mouthful of pablum I'm supposed to swallow today.

There is a lot more to this story, based on media accounts in Tijuana and a police press release. Suspicious notes supposedly left by the dead children and the mother who allegedly committed suicide suggest the mother did it because she no longer had the resources to support her family. However, the dead woman was apparently married to (or the girlfriend of) a gringo who visited her about every two weeks. Also, the dead woman's brother committed suicide a couple of years ago in a house nearby. Lots of confusion in the details, leading some commenters on the websites of El Mexicano and Frontera to question the facts surrounding the gruesome event. Some have suggested it was a triple murder disguised to look like a double-murder/suicide. Whatever the reason, still a tragic and heartbreaking story -- especially for the innocent little girls.

I am looking more into the story. Some do think that the police just gave a quick answer of murder/suicide so the public wouldn't panic more on the issue of violence against women. You can read more about my work on the issue and area here. http://www.uncut-reports.com/2013/03/the-vanishing-women-of-baja.html

Thanks for pointing me to your work on the vanishing women of Baja -- very sobering material indeed. Have you noticed that over the last several days, something like four women have been killed in Tijuana? Don't know if it's coincidence or a trend.

A little of both, coincidence and trend. The atmosphere of making some women vulnerable is out of hand.
