Special Edible Deliveries for Brewery Tasting Rooms

In my last print piece for the Reader, I laid out information, locations and some tips for proper etiquette at the myriad of craft-beer tasting rooms scattered across San Diego County. Part of my dissertation explained that tasting rooms aren't the types of places where you can expect to get good grub to go with your ales and lagers. There are, however, some standout exceptions to this rule and many of them involve food trucks.

For the past year, MIHO Gastrotruck has been engaging in a sweet and savory three-way with Linda Vista's Home Brew Mart and Fiji Yogurt called "Behind the Brewery." HBM is home to one of Ballast Point Brewing Company's pair of tasting rooms, while Fiji is HBM's neighbor and a big fan of BP. At these popular one-night-only affairs, each member of the aforementioned trio brings items to the table which can be paired and enjoyed from picnic tables set up in the brewery, and the barrel-aging room in the back of HBM.

The next event takes place on September 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. The featured savory pairing for the evening will be MIHO's Cioppino with clams, mussels, shrimp, potatoes, local veggies, saffron herb broth and grilled bread, which is made with Ballast Point Wahoo Wheat Beer and is said to go exceptionally well with BP's Calico Amber Ale and Serrano Pale Ale. Meanwhile, Fiji's dessert pairing will be Sextant Oatmeal Stout Malted Milk Ball Yogurt created using the wort (the sugary liquid that water and yeast are added to in order to make beer) extracted during the brewing of Ballast Point Sextant Oatmeal Stout. All three conspirators' full menus will be available as well, including 19 beers, all of which cost just $1 per taster. Home Brew Mart is located at 5401 Linda Vista Road, Suite 406.

Can't make it on such short notice? Check back on November 8 when the trio teams up for a San Diego Beer Week event. Or, if you're not willing to wait that long, consider metriculating north to the tasting room at Mira Mesa's Green Flash Brewing Company, where they'll have a different food truck on-hand every night from now through September 24. The line-up and times are as follows:

Wednesday, 9/21: The Gooch @ 5pm Thursday, 9/22: SD Street Eats @ 5pm Friday, 9/23: Super Q @ 5pm Saturday, 9/24: Street Side Bistro @ 2pm

Green Flash is located at 6550 Mira Mesa Boulevard.
