The amount of people you see in one day that have no clue, is astounding.

It started at LA Fitness. Unless I'm there at 5 to 6 p.m., I can't find any racquetball games.

It was early in the day, and there was a guy hitting a racquetball by himself. Now, one time I saw a guy hitting the ball by himself, I asked him if he wanted to play. He did. The problem was, as I walk into the court, I realize he's mentally challenged. I didn't want to be rude, so I played a few games with him. I think he only hit the ball twice.

So the other day, I see a guy hitting a racquetball by himself. I tap the glass a few times with my knuckles, and he looks over. I say "Do you want to play a game?" He says "What?" And I repeat myself. He then walks over and opens the door, to ask what I said.

I ask him if he wants to play a game. He says he can't, because he's leaving in a few minutes and was just hitting the ball after lifting weights.

I wondered how it was he couldn't tell what I was saying. You don't have to be a lip reader. If you are on a court, usually what's asked of you, is if you want to play a game.

I finally get a few games of basketball in, swim a few laps, and leave.

I'm on the I-15, and there's some crazy accident. A car is on its roof. Fire trucks go by me. There's an ambulance.

I'm in the 2nd to the far left lane. These are the two lanes everyone is going to have to be in to get by. Yet, I notice nobody up in front of me, is letting the line of cars in. When it comes my turn, I let a guy in, only 50 feet from the broken glass and fluids all over the road.

I have no clue why other drivers wouldn't let these people in. It's wall to wall traffic. And, it's an accident scene. It's not like one of those drivers that didn't want to wait in a line, then sped up to the front of it and wanted to cut in.

I then meet my girlfriend at a restaurant. After we are seated, we don't see a waiter or waitress. After 15 minutes we go to the hostess, and ask her. She sends a waitress over. She takes our drink orders. She brings them. Then, we got 20 minutes without seeing her again. We go back to the hostess, asking if we can have our order taken. A different waitress comes over and takes our order.

Our food arrived, and my girlfriend got the wrong kind of cheese on her sandwich. My tacos came without salsa. I went and looked for the waitress. I found her, and asked if I could get salsa. She said, "Oh, those tacos don't come with salsa. But I can bring you some." I said that would be great, and as I walked back to the seat I grabbed a menu. Not only did they come with salsa, but two different kinds!

When she brought it, I told her it says that it comes with salsa on the menu. I didn't say it to be a jerk. I just wanted her to know for future customers.

The bill never came. After 15 minutes, I had to search for someone.

The place was not busy, either.

I see they overcharged me a few bucks on the tacos. I ask about that and she says, "Oh, the steak ones are more expensive." Knowing I'm going to sound like my old Jewish grandmother who I constantly made fun of, I still say "It doesn't say that on the menu." She looks at the menu and says, "You're right. I should've said something, though. I'll take the $2 off."

I didn't leave a tip.

When I left, I went to go put $70 into my gas tank. And, I DON'T OWN AN SUV. The guy in front of me at 7-11, is asking the female clerk all about her husband, who just got back from Iraq. Now, part of me likes the interaction. We need a society that is friendly to each other. But, I want to put gas in my car and go. And, there is a guy behind me that wants to buy his Big Gulp and go. And, a guy behind him with a 6-pack. Maybe we don't want to stand there for 10 minutes while you ask her questions about whether or not her husband was injured, and how much longer he's going to be in the Marines.

I didn't sigh or say anything, because like I said, the guy was being friendly (It had nothing to do with the fact that he was 6'3" with no neck).

But, I just wish more people in this world would think about others. If there's a line, think about what you can do to get your transaction moving faster.

If you work in a restaurant and it's not your first week, learn how to do your job.

If you're on the freeways, be considerate of others.

Instead, they'll probably just pass a law that if a car lands on it's roof, you are required to let drivers merge or you'll get a ticket.

Josh, Eleanor Widmer used to say, never leave no tip; people will think you forgot it. Leave a dime or a nickel.

I remember her saying that. But I never agreed with it. I think if you leave a nickel or dime, it can give the wait staff the oppurtinity to think you're just a cheap b**

  1. Restaurants should pay a decent wage to their workers so this whole tip nonsense goes away. A tip should only be for outstanding service, not an expectation for simply being there. They even expect tips for giving me a paper cup for my coffee nowadays. Geez...just pay the workers a fair wage.

  2. Most drivers are deaf, dumb, and blind it seems. If they're not jabbering away on the phone, eating a greasy burger two handed, or yelling at their soccer kids, they're driving 20 over the limit and tailgating...all in mamoth vehicles better suited to military operations than city streets.

  3. Don't go to health clubs...they're unhealthy. Besides, I did some contracting for that chain a decade ago and got hold of their sales script. It was the slimiest piece of psychological manipulation I've ever seen in my life, and explained why so many people pay monthly for the privilage of carrying a plastic card in their wallet and never entering the premises.

  4. If you are chatting with a clerk, and another person is waiting to complete their transaction, step aside, wait until all the transactions are completed, and then resume your conversation. Alternatively, attempt to have conversations only with clerks who can simultaneously talk and use the register. It's not too difficult to ring up a few items, announce the price, and make change, especially if you're using a scanner.

Golly, sounds like you're in the UK! I've been living here for 7 years and so much service is SO bad just about wherever you go, be it restaurants or shops. And they have no qualms ignoring you or treating you as if 'you're' a nuisance for wanting to buy something or be served LOL. I'm a waitress, and it's tough going for tips here. And you even get people who seem to be horrified at getting good service! Probably because they don't want to have to tip as 1/2 the people here just don't, no matter how good the service is. I always reckoned, if they just gave service staff good wages, you'd have people with more money anyway, who'll go and spend more money, thus the businesses won't really end up losing money in the end. But at the end of the day, they're just too greedy to give anything like that a go anyway :P

Well, my stepbrother gives me a hard time, because I'll often tip the waiter/waitress, based on liking their personality. They could bring the wrong meals, or whatever. Because, to me, bringing me the wrong food, is no biggie. Very rarely am I in a hurry when I eat at a restaurant, so that doesn't bother me.

I've had some waiters that were great, but they weren't very friendly. And, I still end up tipping them well, because the service was great.

So, the only way a waiter/waitress gets a bad tip, or no tip, is if the service sucks, as does their personality. And my logic there is...I don't care that they aren't being paid enough.

I was at the doctors office about a year ago, and this nurse was joking about how I go to parties and write about them. She said her son wished he had that job. She told me he was a waiter at Claim Jumper. And, she was telling me what he makes on tips. I think she said on Saturday nights, he can bring home $500 cash. That's on top of his minimum wage.

I think in the long run, they make the money they deserve.

Regarding health clubs, I have no problem with companies having some goofy sales pitch. It's up to people to be smart enough to look passed it. In high school, I had a different chain, give me this hardcore pitch when I went in. They spent 20 minutes, and wouldn't let me leave.

So, as an adult, when I went to 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness, and Bally's, I'd walk in. I'd tell them I'm looking for a place with indoor basketball, racquetball courts, and a pool. I told them I didn't want the pitch and all the crap about "If you don't sign up today, it will be $150 more tomorrow, or next week, or whatever." And, they just showed me around the facilities, and gave me the prices.

It worked out fine.

It doesn't bother me that they do different things, like after the holidays, they probably have people cold call and say, "Wanna lose all those extra pounds you had from those turkey dinners?" It's business. It's just up to you, when you get a call, to not spend 20 minutes and get frustrated. Politely get them off the phone, and no harm done.
