Playboy Magazine

Famous people appearing in Playboy, and the Miley Cyrus controversy.

For some reason, Playboy magazine has come up with me and my friends a lot lately. It hasn't come up this much with me since the time I was 13, and my friend Patrick and I plotted in great detail how to swipe some from his dads collection.

Oh, there was the time in 1990, when they did an issue of college women, and 10 of the women that posed, came into the radio station I was working at. One was an SDSU student. One an exchange student from France. I think I could probably tell you about each one, but then I'd sound kinda perverted, huh?

But in the span of two days, friends brought up the magazine.

Personally, I hate Hugh Heffner. He has this arrogance that is annoying.

As a magazine, Playboy always had great writers. They had funny comics. And, airbrushed, gorgeous women. I'd never buy one, because I don't want to look like that guy.

When I was in 6th grade, my basketball coach was dating an Asian woman that ended up posing in Playboy. She then went on to date Dodger 2nd baseman Steve Sax. Of course, my entire basketball team went to the liquor store. We talked our 6-foot center, who looked 18, to go in and buy that issue. He did. And...well, we had a level of respect for our coach after that. When he'd make us run suicides or laps, we thought...if we do this enough, we might someday get a woman like that. Our plan was to make it into the NBA, and then get a naked woman. Of course, we'd bar her from appearing in such a magazine for other kids to drool over.

Someone mentioned to me that the cover of the Reader this week looked like a National Geographic. They then asked me if a cover would ever be done to look like a Playboy. I said, "Well, National Georgraphic has a set color and pattern. That's easier to recreate. How can you do that with Playboy? It's always different." Uh...so I've heard.

Richard Pryor once did an album cover that was a parody of National Georgraphic. I've actually never seen it, but once interviewed the photographer that took the photo.

Then there was the news that Hugh Heffner offered Miley Cyrus a layout. Well, that story turned out to be a reporter asking Heff if he would use her in the magazine once she turns 18. He said he would.

Although I don't think there was anything wrong with Heff responding that way. But People shouldn't bring up underage girls, in regards to anything sexual. Sure, as a kid I thought Brooke Shields doing that jeans commercial was great. But really, isn't that a bit sick?

I remember when "Who's the Boss" was running (side note: why does Tony Danza even get acting jobs?), my stepbrother would say that someday Allisa Malino would be so hot. Comments like that, strike me as odd. He said the same thing about Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years (I saw her in La Jolla recently...she's not hot).

Some how, a debate with my girlfriend and stepbrother, was me saying that Playboy would use any famous woman that wanted to appear in the magazine. They both disagreed, saying the woman would have to be hot.

I mentioned Nancy Sinatra as a 60-year-old appearing. Or, the 42-year-old Belinda Carlise. Both look great for their age, but are hardly "hot".

I said, "Look, if Roseanne called them and wanted to appear, they'd take her."

They both laughed for about five minutes, saying I was wrong.

Well, thanks to Google, we got an answer for our debate.

Roseanne was in Playboy in the 90s. But, that was just an interview. When I searched for pictures, I found that after she lost all that weight, she approached them about appearing. They turned her down.

I lost that debate.
