The ’Burbs

I love this write-up. Priceless details abound: the parents who gossip about other parents' corn syrup policies; the clipboard-toting homeowner association members. And the contrast between the block parties, Tierrasanta vs El Cajon, is a great example of the difference between living in a 'burb and living in a 'hood with a little more flavor. Nicely done.

Clouds Gone Wild

You're welcome, cece5650. Keep the San Diego spirit going. And don't forget to visit, if you can't get out here full time. Indeed, SDaniels, we've had unusual and interesting cloud cover for a few days now. We ought to enjoy it while we can...pretty soon, it'll be nothin' but sun (not that there's anything wrong with it). On the camera angle tip, that shot across the water came from the jetty known as Avalanche, which is near the foot of Cape May Avenue. I wanted to get a longer shot from that spot, but a large and aggressive swarm of beach flies encouraged me to move along.

Great call on using a mural to decorate your store. I wish more business people (and homeowners, too) would put local artists to work and adorn some of the bare walls around town. Bare walls are so boring!

Tourism in Tailspin

Man, SurfPuppy, if public employee pay and benefits bug you, the ridiculous compensation commandeered by CEOs and other execs must drive you absolutely bonkers. Here's how we're really getting robbed: "In 1965, U.S. CEOs in major companies earned 24 times more than an average worker; this ratio grew to 35 in 1978 and to 71 in 1989. The ratio surged in the 1990s and hit 300 at the end of the recovery in 2000. The fall in the stock market reduced CEO stock-related pay (e.g., options) causing CEO pay to moderate to 143 times that of an average worker in 2002. Since then, however, CEO pay has exploded and by 2005 the average CEO was paid $10,982,000 a year, or 262 times that of an average worker ($41,861)." http://www.epi.org/economic_snapshots/entry/webfe…

Corporate Heads Warn: Sober Up

Two years from now is when the inflation sets in? Sounds like you've got a crystal ball, Mr. Bauder! I guess I'll hold off on going to an all-TIPS portfolio until 2010. One fact I'm trying to incorporate into my analysis is that, to date, only about 5% of the $787 billion stimulus package has been spent. Is this part of your inflation prediction? Will we see prices start to rise when the stimulus money really starts flowing? On the corporate signaling front, I hear stock sales by executives are running high right now. Which suggests that the people at the top of publicly traded companies are not very bullish about their stocks' long-term prospects.

Propagandhi

Back when I was in high school in the early 90s, my buddy Mike had Propagandhi's first album, How To Clean Everything, in his car at all times. When we were in need of a boost to our spirits, we would blast tracks like "Ska Sucks" or "Haillie Sellasse, Up Your Ass." Those two tracks alone are enough to make Prop a legend of punk IMHO. The music packs just the right amount of angst, and the lyrics are on a level all their own. For example: An amalgamation of Jewish scripture And Christian thought What will that get you? The Idiotic ACLU

The ACLU has to challenge censorship and invasion of privacy, wherever it turns up in our country, as part of the never-ending battle to maintain our personal freedoms and keep the government out of our private lives. It's based on the slippery slope theory, where permission slips, which seem innocent enough, may evolve into a more outright censorship of facts and ideas in a school. Or where drug testing of high school athletes may evolve into more serious breaches of personal privacy by government. Defending personal freedoms sometimes means defending words and ideas that make many of us uncomfortable. That's why I think the ACLU is a wonderful organization. They're willing to fight the unpopular fight today, so that we don't have to fight a much more serious fight tomorrow. A small sampling of the many achievements of the ACLU: 1920s: fought against the movement to teach literal interpretation of Bible's creationism in public schools 1950s: initiated case of Brown v. Board of Education, which resulted in ending of racial segregation in schools 1960s: successfully fought bans on interracial marriage in several states 1970s: played key roles in impeachment of Richard Nixon and in Roe v. Wade

Here we go again

OK, I'm just about ready to let this thread go. Thanks for starting up and maintaining a good discussion! Just one more thing from me, on the Mexican immigration laws. You say that Mexico's immigration laws are very strict. I'd respond that their laws have no bearing on our laws. For one thing, our country has more resources than Mexico, by an order of magnitude. For another, we shouldn't make our laws based on the lowest common denominator...we should make our laws based on what we think is right. And I happen to think that welcoming immigrants is the right thing to do, not just because it's in our national interest, but because it's also the morally proper thing to do. In fact, given that many U.S. citizens say they live in a Christian nation, I was thinking of closing with an excerpt from Jesus's Sermon on the Mount, where he pretty much says "you gotta help out those who have less than you." But no need to go religious to get this point across. Here's how it's written on the plaque inside our Statue of Liberty: A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome... "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
