Blackout looming for Chargers' NFL playoff game?
"Ice Conditions Possible; Drive with Care.!" That's what my rental car is telling me. As luck would have it, my sadistic boss sent me to an emergency 1-week job in Green Bay, 1 mile from Lambeau field, starting Saturday morning. Workers didn't work Sunday, so I sat it out in the hotel, 2 miles from the stadium. Yes, it was full of fans, and fan's families. I saw fans for both teams here. The cheezeheads were wearing wedge hats and bras (the men). The Niner's fans were wearing coats and furry hats. It was somber after the game, obviously. And the cold did make a difference, even to locals. My work contact here had 3 tickets for the game, but even he said there was no way he was going in that weather. He offered one to me, and I also demured. As for the liquor store, well, it's mostly beer here. But you're right about sure sellouts, in some neighborhoods. Like this one. Brrrrrr. Looking forward to it getting back up to zero by Wednesday.— January 6, 2014 8:53 p.m.
SDG&E in legal tangle with Montana wind farms
I work in this industry. I have worked on wind turbines in that part of the country. I was told a wind turbine has blades that are going 300 MPH at their tips. How can any bird avoid that? While working in the field one day, I found a small dead hawk beneath a turbine. The site manager collected the bird in a baggie and put in in the freezer for an investigation by an independent ecologist. The companies and their workers are not trying to hide these incidents. But as the Canadian article shows, other sources kill so many more birds. While I personally think turbines aren't as good a bet as solar for alternative power, I don't think the bird issue should be a major factor indetermining their existence.— December 29, 2013 10:51 p.m.

Qualcomm may be bidder for ailing BlackBerry
If Qualcomm buys Blackberry, and Blackberry is headquartered in Canada, then maybe they'd start hiring engineers foreign to Canada, as is their usual aim here in San Diego. Well, I'd be a foreign engineer, in Canada. Seems that might actually raise my chances of being hired at Qualcomm. I approve. Hey, my cell is a Blackberry. Interesting.— November 4, 2013 3:13 a.m.

Take a spin in David Copley's former yacht
Okaaay, let's do a mathematical comparison. I frequently rent generic mid and full size cars froom Hertz. They probably cost around 20K. My rental charges (minus the exhorbitant airport 'fees') average less than $200 a week. I know Hertz sells its cars before they're two years old. If I divide 20K by 104 (2 X 52 weeks), I come up with $192, close to my average weekly charge. If I divide 34 Mil by 104 I get 326K, so maybe 250K is really a bargain. I would imagine that International Yacht Collection is more selective of clients than Hertz, and cleans their yachts better for each customer (oh, the stories I could tell about Hertz rentals). This is fun. Thanks Don.— October 19, 2013 6:24 a.m.
San Diego State marijuana lobbyist and big back taxes
Matt, Don, and all the other readers. That's why I not only subscribe to the UT online, but also the SacBee online. You really get the whole picture. Or at least, more views. Worth looking into.— October 7, 2013 9:06 p.m.
ResMed founder says government shutdown a good thing
Gut reaction. Damn gummint. Yeah, I hear it all the time. I travel all over for my job. I regularly work with people who ignore the fact that a good portion of their income is from the very government they accuse of ripping them off. But I just realized why we'll never change our voting day from Tuesday to a weekend day, like so many other intelligent governments do. In America, too many tea party sympathisers are glued to ESPN, or partying at the local sports bar, on Sunday. The Conservatives would lose more if we switched to Sunday voting. Just a thought.— October 6, 2013 8:57 p.m.
