The GOP’s generational black hole
If Jared has forgotten 'morning in America" and the affable huckster who sold it to us, that is not all bad. But Jared may not be ready for the new crop of "passionate and articulate" GOP candidates of the Cruz, Trump and Christie variety. In this amusing election season, voter turnout from both political parties is dramatically less than it was in 2012 and voter registration shows more independents than partisan choice. If these facts portend non-participation in the process, we could be in more serious trouble than even Nienstedt imagines.— February 26, 2016 9:19 p.m.
Is the Chargers' favorite city about to get dirtied up?
I just read today that a community near LA -- maybe Burbank? -- was changing a street name into Ikea Way, because guess what's at the end of the road? Some neighboring businesses approved, some didn't, but it's happening.— February 26, 2016 2:17 p.m.
Is the Chargers' favorite city about to get dirtied up?
Disappointed to read that lawyer Pat Shea is casting his lot with John Moores, who already fleeced the citizenry with Petco and environs and corrupted a city councilmember who is said to live off Moore's payoff even now. I agree with Javajoe25 that we could use a professional soccer team here -- a graceful game of finesse compared to brain-death-dealing primitive football. Soccer would draw kids -- as football doesn't now and surely won't in the future -- and it can be played at Qualcomm. We don't need any more new stadiums -- we need new streets, streetlights, curbs, sidewalks, sewer pipes and parks.— February 25, 2016 10:51 p.m.
Chargers redeclare wish for downtown stadium
Love this rogues' gallery also -- two in the same day! I always get out my sharpie and draw mustaches and snaggle-teeth on the especially reprehensible Moores, Maas, Sanders and Goldsmith. With an ampersand, they could be a law firm! They certainly know how to screw an entire city.— February 23, 2016 8:47 p.m.
Will Union-Tribune finally lose its master from hell?
I enjoyed the photographic rogues' gallery. You keep flogging the charter school proclivities of Eli Broad, but I doubt that item tops the mogul's agenda for owning a newspaper - something that has not happened yet and, judging from the emaciated size of the daily Los Angeles Times and its plethora of "special correspondents" and non-staff writers, may never happen. By the time Eli gets a price-point he likes, the LATimes may be history. If print journalism is going by the boards and online is the new panacea, the Union-Tribune in its present state of confusion and e-mess is not going to make it into the next calendar year. Even if one "subscribes," you cannot access U-T links directly or seamlessly without jumping through elaborate hoops of "registration" and "sign-in." Actually, there is no reliable online access at all. Of all the places in this country that need a daily newspaper with an experienced staff and a mission to afflict the comfortable, San Diego is it. As of now, the U-T lacks printing presses and even a place for staff to hang their hats, make their calls and file their stories. When are they moving downtown?— February 23, 2016 8:31 p.m.
Introducing Faulconer's brain, ethically speaking
There's nothing like having a lobbyist on your ethics panel discussion. It's true he's handsome and probably polite, but come on, Stacey Fulhorst, this is ridiculous.— February 22, 2016 8:47 p.m.
Bicyclist vs. city's pothole
Such extremely unsafe conditions are common across this sprawling city. It is criminal neglect. Thanks to Dorian Hargrove for this story. Two evenings ago I was driving in a quiet residential neighborhood near Windansea beach in La Jolla. As I passed, a tall male jogger on the sidewalk suddenly tumbled headfirst into the street at a corner. A person walking their dog on the other side moved to help him. It was surreal, silent, like a transient bad dream. I know this area well: it is poorly lit -- pitch black after dark -- and the street itself is full of holes, patches and crevasses, especially uneven at curb gutters where superficial asphalt cover has disintegrated. Day or night, it is hazardous to pedestrians, runners and cyclists. The City knows but does nothing. Council representative Sherri Lightner knows but does nothing.— February 20, 2016 12:04 p.m.
Pope Francis caps visit to Mexico by smuggling himself into the United States
You are a fantastical and funny guy, Walter, but the part about unprecedented numbers of deportees under the Obama administration is sadly factually true. Doctored photo of Popey and Donald at the Border fence is a keeper.— February 19, 2016 2:18 p.m.
Rubio's Roe boat floats Faulconer
Too true. The bottom line for GOP mayors ever since Cruella deVille Susan Golding has been that they should be likeable -- not just "likeable enough," which was Obama's dead-right assessment of Hillary Clinton a few years ago. Dick Murphy? Sincerely likeable. Jerry Sanders? Avuncularly likeable. Mayor Sunny? Mr. Accentuate the Positive, totally not hateable.— February 18, 2016 6:09 p.m.
City attorney’s sex talk
I'd say an endorsement of Casey Gwinn for Gil Cabrera is the kiss of death. Any public official who disparages orderly public comment at public meetings -- "everybody just gets to come and do their thing" -- deserves to be remembered and NEVER asked for a political attaboy. Maybe Cabrera can give it back. I personally appreciate Matt Potter's documentation of exactly what Gwinn said and believed on a range of topics. To characterize Gwinn's extreme born-again views with "protecting families and children in San Diego" is completely misleading and invites negative voter opinion about Cabrera.— February 17, 2016 1:42 p.m.
