Opera board still looking for donors
I wish you would stop asserting -- as if it were fact and not opinion -- that Ian Campbell has been "overpaid over such a long period." In my opinion which is supported by the record, Campbell has been a hard-working genius who has delivered a fabulous product over many years. Just this morning the Los Angeles Times ran a story about a public school superintendent in a poor area with only five high schools and 6000 students. He takes home more than $600,000 a year.— April 1, 2014 1:42 p.m.
Will county extravaganza avoid Balboa Park mistakes?
Drawing looks like a big improvement over present no-man's land at the Harbor and good that opening-weekend "inflatables" will be replaced with permanent playground equipment. But underground parking at night? Will the garage have some security or will it be entirely automated, as at the ill-fated Jacobs-funded garage proposal for Balboa Park?— March 31, 2014 12:26 p.m.
An operatic death
I was with you until you accused San Diego Opera Director Ian Campbell of not being "genuinely enthusiastic for music," for not communicating enthusiasm. That is a ridiculous charge engendered, I trust, by deep disappointment that the Opera is closing its doors.— March 28, 2014 3:12 p.m.
Will San Onofre settlement help ratepayers?
Capt D, all those capitalized acronyms and whatever-else are very confusing. MSM??? I think I have figured out that you mean "mainstream media." Please spell everything out (literally) the first time, so that readers can follow your train of thought.— March 28, 2014 3:02 p.m.
Twenty-three percent at UCSD experienced "exclusionary" conduct, survey says
Add $602,200 for this study to the salary of the head of the office of diversity (which was established under former Chancellor MaryAnne Fox and whose hire split in less than a year) and you're talking serious money. Also, did pollsters Rankin & Associates think up that category called "genderqueer?"— March 28, 2014 2:49 p.m.
Maintenance deferred
Cars on the grass at City parks? Nothing new. This April will mark the 10th anniversary of the closing-off of La Jolla Cove's oceanfront greensward for an entire weekend of cars-on-the-grass for the pricey private old-car expo called "Concours d'Elegance." "Concours" claims to be part charity/benefit for the La Jolla Historical Society, but no figures have ever been provided and it's unclear if the City gets rent or reparations for damaged turf at the Cove. "Concours" is routinely approved by (advisory) La Jolla Parks and Beaches subcommittee to Parks and Rec. Even last month "Concours" in absentia got a go-ahead vote from the La Jolla Community Planning Association, when expo representatives failed to show up for a scheduled pro forma permission presentation.— March 27, 2014 12:07 p.m.
Distressed real estate kingpin goes big for Brewer
Maybe "Too many questions, buddy," but too few answers, too. Why would a law enforcement association/union pick a real estate foreclosure vulture to front their political campaign contributions? I just don't get it. Maybe in this instance the sheriffs are getting bad advice from some big-bucks campaign consultant.— March 27, 2014 11:38 a.m.
High-pressure sales job
It didn't take long for Kevin Faulconer to shed that moniker about being "Mayor for all of San Diego." He's already shilling for GOP uber-conservative Carl DeMaio in his race to take away Congressman Scott Peters' seat? That's really tacky. Whatever happened to the old decent interval? In fact, Peters' district likes him -- presentable, intelligent, calm. well-spoken, not too lib, not gay, not right-wing --as in Goldilocks, Rep. Scott Peters is juuust right.— March 26, 2014 9:35 p.m.
Opera president denies ugliest rumors
1. Joan Kroc wanted to fund first class grand opera -- great singers, a big chorus, a full orchestra, elegant dancers, beautiful costumes and sets. That's just what Ian Campbell delivered, time and again. Thank you, Joan Kroc. 2. Ian Campbell was NOT overpaid. He delivered a perfect exquisite opera experience. Thank you, Ian Campbell. 3. The entire Opera Board should have voted on a matter of such magnitude. 4. The City of San Diego -- its terrible ignorant mayors and its awful ignorant city council members -- was derelict not to cut the Opera's rent on the Civic Center. Mayor Filner would not have been party to this disaster without turning heaven and earth to keep the Opera in business.— March 26, 2014 9:16 p.m.
Work for the Port or the City? You’re exempt from lobby laws
Should we give this lobbyist guy credit for asking the ethics commission for a ruling? Or did he just anticipate a slam-dunk opinion? Hard to know. Considering its interpretations, should we get rid of the ethics commission? Probably, noting"...a loophole in the lobbying prohibition big enough to drive a power plant or a bayside hotel through...."— March 26, 2014 1:10 p.m.
