Local cities secure new funding for DUI checkpoints
There should be "Draconian penalties" for ALL repeat offenders who actually injure others. Theft, battery, any crime where you hurt people or deprive them of their rights or property. First offense, we try to rehabilitate you. Second, we just lock you up for 20 years. Third, we throw the key away. Period. No "But it was only a piece of pizza!" I don't care, this is someone who CANNOT STOP COMMITTING CRIMES.— November 17, 2013 8:30 a.m.
Local cities secure new funding for DUI checkpoints
Maybe the drunks are finding more ways to avoid the checkpoints? We cannot get around the basic fact that these checkpoints are completely unAmerican. "But we catch some drunks,a nd that's good!" cannot be used as a justification without opening the door to MORE checkpoints. Why not occasional door-to-door searches for wanted felons, contraband, evidence of possible crimes, etc? After all, you don't have anything to hide, do you? Instead of sitting there and stopping people with no reasonable suspicion other than it's "their turn", how about having those cops actively patrolling, looking for people who actually appear to be driving under the influence (and other crimes).— November 17, 2013 8:27 a.m.
City faces lawsuit over condos' defective pipes
Filner's gone. Time to get over it and move on. There will be more partisan Kool-Aid to gulp soon, I'm sure.— November 17, 2013 8:23 a.m.

Ballast Point building new brewery
More porters and stouts, less IPAs! Too often, it seems IPAs are like hot sauce... "Watch me as I drink the nastiest crap that would make anyone else gag!" Million-SHU hot sauce isn't good, it's a demonstration. Same with the super-extra-double-hoppy IPAs. For crying out loud, the hoppy IPAs were barreled to survive long journeys to India, not to be good!— November 11, 2013 6:38 p.m.
Letters from near and far
"Many students in the neighborhood live in houses that have been converted to “mini-dorms” by investors who literally would purchase perfectly good homes at lower prices while still outbidding families" How, EXACTLY, did they do that? How did they "outbid" families while still paying "too little"? Details, please.— November 11, 2013 6:33 p.m.
Land owner Stuck in the Rough puts up fencing in Escondido
Anyone who doesn't approve of the use SITR wants to put their property to is free to make an offer. Sorry, but all of these "promises" were made decades ago by people who do not own the property today. Golf courses are rarely profitable any more, but the land still represents a huge investment. The people who live there should be putting their money where their mouths are and offering to buy the land. But that isn't what they want at all... they want someone else to pay the price (read: the taxpayer, because who else is going to cave in to them?) and let them decide how the land is going to be used.— November 11, 2013 6:28 p.m.
Ruth Lesslie defends decision to let Predator Drone lead 2013 San Diego Veteran's Day Parade
I really do not understand the fluffheads who blather about "drones" but couldn't care less about manned aircraft. As if the only possible purpose for a drone is to launch Hellfires, and if a drone is flying in US airspace, then by gum a US citizen needs to get hit with one! These are the same people who cry about "smart meters" infecting them with WiFi signals as they sit at Starbucks blogging about their paranoia over free WiFi.— November 11, 2013 6:22 p.m.
Larcenists' loot displayed in Valley Center
Theft should be a three strikes crime. Any three crimes of violence, theft, or deprivation of rights should equal life without parole, period, full stop.— November 11, 2013 6:20 p.m.

Burglary is entering a structure with the intent to commit theft or ant felony therein. CPC 459.— November 11, 2013 6:19 p.m.
