Ashford University to close its doors
That's OK, Bridgepoint will just buy another accredited university and run it into the ground. Lather, rinse, repeat.— July 17, 2015 10:25 a.m.
Meanwhile, USD allegedly awakens rape perps
At any time, "Jane Doe" could have just gone and reported the alleged rape. I wonder why she didn't. She "feared for her safety", and instead of calling the police, went back to the same school officials who supposedly "refused to take action". "Doe also claims that the men were allowed to introduce false evidence during the hearing" They could make the same claim, that she's the one providing "false evidence". They could ask why someone is allowed to make anonymous accusations against them but they weren't being allowed to mount a defense. There's more to this story. I'm always EXTREMELY skeptical when I hear, "Here's a sad tale, you must believe it 100%, you cannot question it, you must accept it at face value or you're a monster." We already live in a society where some allegations, like rape, are considered to be a final proof of guilt in too many cases. We're far better off questioning and looking for the truth instead of accepting the immediate visceral reaction.— July 17, 2015 10:19 a.m.
Fate of Chargers predicted
The Rams and the Raiders were already in LA. They left. They left for reasons. The Chargers fan base is in San Diego, and the historic SD-LA rivalry will prevent them from being successful there. Everyone knows this. The Chargers are trying to use LA as a lever to frighten San Diego into building a new stadium for them. All we have to do is not fall for it. They do NOT want to leave. They will if they believe that'll result in a bigger pile of money, but they know their best long-term prospects are right here in San Diego.— July 17, 2015 10:05 a.m.
How Airbnb is ruining Pacific Beach
I'm sure lots of people would say MB was "ruined" by apartments stuffed full of drunk college kids. "What happened to the families, oh it's so terrible, we used to be able to play cribbage with the Joneses on our patio and it was so wonderful until those awful apartments came in!" The idea that it's better to have "long term renters" who are partying all night and puking in the alleys is better than nasty "short term" vacationers who are paying a premium is ludicrous. If you want to decide how the property is being used, buy it! In a few years, there'll be some new phenomenon to bemoan, and people will be longing for the good ol' days when AirBNB was all they had to complain about.— July 15, 2015 11:18 a.m.
Mayor's $1.6 million drought PR plan is back
Are building permits still being issued?— July 9, 2015 8:59 a.m.
Young, black, and...hassled?
From the individuals who did bad deeds. And yes, it's entirely possible that a court might render a judgment of millions, and then the wrongdoer might blubber that they don't have it. Oh well. Why should the taxpayer pay?— July 9, 2015 8:59 a.m.
Getting Rid of Gophers
I miss the good ol' days. We'd get Gopher Gassers (which were like road flares, which are a substitute for today, but "gassier"), light one, stick it down a hole, and plug the hole with a wad of newspaper. Now, the squirrels had a choice... stay in their hole and asphyxiate, or run out to face my dog and my 12 gauge shotgun. I could also hang out in the garage with my .22 and shoot them off the spots they liked to hang around on. Many a summer day was spent eradicating pests and having some fun at the same time, but that's probably multiple felonies today :-(— July 9, 2015 8:56 a.m.
Carefully crafted comments
Re: "Put Them To Work" - What, exactly, do you think pit bulls on the border would do? They'd welcome illegals and cartel members with wagging tails and kisses. I'm not sure how that would support our national security. Pitties make TERRIBLE "guard dogs".— July 9, 2015 8:47 a.m.
The fishing license gap
It's always a money-grab with government. Yet we still have people believing that we need more government, or that government which has always performed so poorly is just about to start doing wonderful things, all we need is one more law or tax!— July 9, 2015 8:39 a.m.
Young, black, and...hassled?
All public entities should be 100% immune from civil torts. The only possible outcome here is that the taxpayers will wind up writing a check. Individuals who did bad deeds will keep their jobs, salaries, benefits, and pensions. Individuals are the only ones who should be held accountable, and if we aren't going to do that then we should certainly get away from the fiction that because something bad happened, a check must be written, the check must come from someone with money, and the taxpayer is the only one exposed.— July 8, 2015 12:54 p.m.
