Good Jobs First attacks corporate welfare
"Entitlements" to the poor are simply handouts that encourage dependency and laziness. Reducing taxes to employers is supposed to encourage them to grow and hire. What, precisely, is wrong with that???— September 17, 2015 8:59 a.m.
Good Jobs First attacks corporate welfare
Reducing taxes is not "welfare". "We would have taken $100 from you, instead we'll take $80, that means we're giving you $20" Huh??? We tax liquor and cigarettes and "bad" things to try to discourage people from using them. Shouldn't we be doing the opposite for work, employment, etc?— September 17, 2015 8:58 a.m.
No Miami-ization of Mission Beach
If we're in a "drought", no building permits should be issued for anything but replacement structures. How are any of us supposed to believe there's a a shortage of water while tens of thousands of new water users are being welcomed in?— September 17, 2015 8:56 a.m.
Eli Broad's billion-dollar blackjack?
Iran has broken every agreement they've ever signed. Within about 5 years, they'll be announcing they have the bomb, and all of the appeasers will be running around waving their hands in the air screeching, "Wait, what? This isn't possible! Our Messiah told us! they promised! Republicans must be at fault!" We should have bombed Natanz into a crater years ago. Barack Obama is going to go down in history as the worst President in history, the one who caused the most damage to our nation ever. He makes Franklin Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson look like absolute pikers. He's even worse than Bush 43, and that's saying something.— September 13, 2015 11:38 a.m.
What's next for Union-Tribune real estate?
I thought we were in a drought. Why is any development being considered while we're being told to let our yards die and to take "sea showers" with a bucket?— September 13, 2015 11:34 a.m.
Here comes SDG&E for their giveaway
We need more information. The "heavy energy users" may very well be business, employers, providing services and goods we need, etc. And the poor miserly "conservation-minded" users may be do-nothings who are already receiving heavily-subsidized rates and are now being asked to pay more of a fair share for what they use. We should absolutely move to a "time of use" plan. Electricity is basically fungible at any given point in time. As demand climbs, prices should go up. There is no reason why the "poor" cannot use energy at night when it's basically free, and leave the power at peak times for those who actually need it. Everyone will wind up better off.— September 13, 2015 11:20 a.m.
Here comes SDG&E for their giveaway
Google "Los Angeles Department of Water & Power". They do EVERYTHING that these dreaded "corporations" do... but they do it as a government entity, and are therefore immune to any meaningful criticism, reform, etc. Plus, all of those "awful corporations" have special monopolies granted to them BY GOVERNMENT! Instead of demanding yet more government, why not have competition? Why not have the physical infrastructure owned by one regulated entity that can only charge enough for maintenance, upkeep, repairs, and upgrades; then allow anyone and everyone to buy and sell water or power or TV or Internet access from or to anyone they want?— September 13, 2015 11:15 a.m.
Issa says criminal history should be shielded
If someone's a threat to society, they should be behind bars. If they're deemed to be "rehabilitated", "no longer a threat", "paid their debt to society"; then they should be FULLY reintegrated with society... able to take any job, vote, buy a gun, whatever. And if they keep committing crimes, they should be locked up for life with no parole. I don't know what's so terrible about this idea. But an awful lof of people seem to love creating and perpetuating criminals, then letting dangerous predators out. Why? To justify more government, higher taxes, more unions and pensions, most probably.— September 13, 2015 11:06 a.m.
SEC kicks Ray Lucia's "Buckets of Money" ploy
A guaranteed rate of return barely above inflation, or a healthy chance of earning far more. Hmmm... BTW, free hint... there is no money in SS for anyone to "get their hands on". There is no huge pot of sweet, sweet money sitting there... only a pile of IOUs. And that's where you're staking your future... on a pile of IOUs. Thanks, but I'll take my 401(k), my IRA, my savings, and my other investments any day of the week.— September 9, 2015 1:01 p.m.
San Diego as sports fans' city: so-so
We just have too much going on in San Diego to obsess over professional sports. I've said it before, and I'll say it again... "real sports fans" need to move to any one of a huge number of "real sports cities", because that ain't San Diego. Sure, we'll watch a game and have fun... but there's lots to do before, after, or instead of, and we just can't get that worked up.— September 9, 2015 12:58 p.m.
