ESD, the tag that stands for East San Diego
Very pleased to read about programs that encourage aspiring artists to turn their creativity into career training - people might be surprised at how much one can learn about graphic design and advertising appeal from training on a large-scale, using the cheapest at-hand materials. Those skills have much monetizing potential nowadays, with graffiti-style art and lettering actually in demand for a number of paying client platforms. I know there's much to debate about tagging, territory, gangs, and all the related aspects of graffiti art, but the main thing about the article that I wanted to hear about was how to detour young people away from crime and toward artistry. And I liked what I heard --

Not necessarily on the comeback trail
The former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist's new band Red Dragon Cartel will drop its self-titled debut album (Lee's first in two decades) January 28 via Frontiers Records.

Ten best Frank Zappa albums for people who think they hate Zappa
It's been interesting reading Facebook comments with suggestions from others on what I could/should have included. One Size Fits All is a solid pick - its very title declares its intent to engage, with whatever it takes to keep you spinning that wax. I might have run with that rather than the You Can't Do That on Stage series had I thought about it more, since the Stage sets keep coming out, covering the entire period he performed concerts (mid-60s to late-80s) - My problem with Thingfish is mainly too much spoken word, and much of that read with irritating arch-ness. I suspect it purposefully annoys, and that's not what I put on music for --

Getting to know Jaws of Terror, Alley Cat Street, Champ, and more
Alley Cat Street specializes in the music of the Jerry Garcia Band, through which quite a few members came and went. I'm told that ACS does a number of tunes from the rich period when guitarist Buddy Cage (New Riders of the Purple Haze) anchored the Garcia group -

Old new media
Fascinating! Especially the bit about an old '87 Mac being used for cutting edge new creations - we abandon old tech for new tech too quickly, often before the old stuff really gets utilized to its fullest extent. Hence so many musicians just now discovering the possibilities of vintage cheapie Casio keyboards -

Ten best Frank Zappa albums for people who think they hate Zappa
Jazz From Hell is an excellent recommendation! If I was preaching the Zappa gospel to a jazz fan, that one and Weasels Ripped My Flesh would be excellent -- and accessible -- primers.

How the Breaking Bad finale lied to you (and why you were so easily fooled)
Mr. White talks to his students in the first eps about how nature is filled with "transformation" - but, really, most transformations in nature involve shedding temporary skin on order to reveal the REAL thing that has always been beneath the shed layers. The caterpillar is destined to become a butterfly, but no butterfly ever becomes a caterpillar - by Mr. White's own lesson plan, underneath it all, he's always been Heisenberg. His other self was just a temporary cocoon -

And I liked what I heard --— December 11, 2013 3:21 p.m.
Not necessarily on the comeback trail

I suspect it purposefully annoys, and that's not what I put on music for --— December 8, 2013 1:42 p.m.
Getting to know Jaws of Terror, Alley Cat Street, Champ, and more
Alley Cat Street specializes in the music of the Jerry Garcia Band, through which quite a few members came and went. I'm told that ACS does a number of tunes from the rich period when guitarist Buddy Cage (New Riders of the Purple Haze) anchored the Garcia group -— December 5, 2013 9:25 a.m.
Old new media
Fascinating! Especially the bit about an old '87 Mac being used for cutting edge new creations - we abandon old tech for new tech too quickly, often before the old stuff really gets utilized to its fullest extent. Hence so many musicians just now discovering the possibilities of vintage cheapie Casio keyboards -— December 4, 2013 7:55 p.m.
Ten best Frank Zappa albums for people who think they hate Zappa
Jazz From Hell is an excellent recommendation! If I was preaching the Zappa gospel to a jazz fan, that one and Weasels Ripped My Flesh would be excellent -- and accessible -- primers.— December 4, 2013 7 a.m.

His other self was just a temporary cocoon -— November 26, 2013 9 p.m.
