Oscar recap
Scott, you're living in a fantasy universe if you don't think abuse doesn't go on without student witnesses reporting it. Catholic Schools, boarding schools, military academies, military boot camps, etc, have had abuses occur for decades without anyone reporting it. The football guy who was raping kids for years, got away with it for a long time, even though his boss knew about it. And the teacher in Whiplash DOES get ratted out. And how is Boyhood, "life affirming?" It's a slice of life movie like hundreds before it, but it had a cute gimmick. It also drives me nuts that people think it deserved "Best Editing." For what? Linklater shot a couple scenes a year. The editor didn't have 12 years of footage to go through. They had 12 years to cut a couple scenes each year. If anything, nominate the cinematographer for color grading all those years to match. Otherwise it would've looked like a Soderbergh movie.— February 24, 2015 7:44 p.m.
Complaint Department
Scott speaks for us cinephiles who prefer art to artlessness. You site Ebert, Siskel and Roper as pantheons of film criticism? Siskel had the better taste and Roger loved everything (except David Lynch), but they were popcorn criticism. Don't get me started on Kael. You already have USA Today and Entertainment Tonight to blow smoke up back up Hollywood's exhaust pipe, we don't need another fawning reviewer to tell us how great the next Julia Roberts' movie is. I may not always agree with Scott, but at least he's got the ballz to stand by his convictions and give voice to those of us whose respect for film goes beyond an afternoon's diversion with some Raisinets.— December 20, 2013 8:44 p.m.

Review: Act of Valor
Seeing as Backdraft was a piece of sh*t, I cannot take your cinematic opinions seriously. I don't even need to mention Tears of the Sun. It seems you are more enthralled with the existence of the movie instead of the execution. There's nothing wrong with telling the story of Navy Seals (or anyone in the military), as long as it's done well and not just another piece of propaganda. The trailer was enough to tell me everything I need to know. This was made by a boardroom of execs who thought they'd be able to get asses in seats with this nifty gimmick. It worked too (surprisingly, since most exec decisions are disasters).— February 26, 2012 3:54 p.m.
Dig A Hole: Charles Napier, Russ Meyer & Jonathan Demme Staple
He was a fellow Kentuckian, and my face always lit up too when I saw his name in credits.— October 8, 2011 1:06 p.m.
Midnight in Paris Woody Allen's Biggest Grosser to Date
I suppose I should see this at some point, but Woody hasn't done anything interesting (for me) since Husbands and Wives.— July 18, 2011 1:28 p.m.
Blow Out the Pilot Light: JLo and Marc Anthony Kaput!
She showed such promise in Out of Sight, then chucked it all. Can't comment on Anthony in Bringing Out the Dead, cuz that's the one Marty film that made me really angry. Hated it.— July 16, 2011 9:13 a.m.
Trailer: Martin Scorsese's Hugo
Seemed pretty generic (dull). John Logan hasn't written anything good (his name is on The Aviator, which I liked, but so were other people). The Sacha Baron Cohen bits looked pretty lame. I guess we'll have to wait and see.— July 15, 2011 8:47 a.m.
To Zoom Or Not to Zoom?
Disagree on the zooms in Barry Lyndon. Kubrick's zoom use is annoying. Altman was the best user of zooms. I've always considered them cheap dollies, but it is just a tool. If you use it well, there's nothin' wrong with it. But it certainly shouldn't be a substitute if you use it only for convenience.— June 29, 2011 12:35 p.m.
