Hewitt Leaves U.S. Attorney Office, Joins Jones Day
USA Hewitt was 1-1 versus SDG&E, with AUSA Melanie Pierson getting 2007 guilty verdicts against the Sempra-owned public utility and several individuals in 2007, but having the re-trial dismissed after key evidence was held inadmissible in round two late last year. Compared to state and county prosecutors, the US Attorney's office gets credit for at least trying to hold somebody accountable for "corporate arrogance" as it was described in closing arguments.— June 2, 2010 2:37 p.m.

City Trying to Block Deposition of Sanders
July 9 @ 10:30... only another heart attack will keep me outta downtown's Justice Complex that day. I can only hope for the sake of real journalists (not hobby types like me) that the pre-hearing filings are not sealed. Even if they don't contain "facts", the City's arguments RE mayoral protective order ought to be illuminating...— June 1, 2010 9:24 p.m.
Flags On Graves Always Make Me Cry
"many of the soldiers were Civil War veterans some Confederate...some Union..." ----- When I got to the Old Guard, 17 and straight out of JROTC, I spent many hours walking through Arlington National Cemetery, past the old Lee Mansion at the center of it, and among the headstones of the Civil War veterans. I got a taste of the discrimination back then on noting that the shape of every Confederate soldier's tombstone was cut in a manner to separate all of them from the tombstones of Federal soldiers. (I did what I hope was a non controversial blog entitled "Torchlight Tattoo Memory for Memorial Day"...)— June 1, 2010 1:25 p.m.
City Trying to Block Deposition of Sanders
It would be reasonable to limit a deposition of a "strong" mayor to those topics directly related to City management of business improvement districts (BIDs) and similar redevelopment agencies generally to establish ordinary patterns of conduct, formal and informal contacts and contracts with developers and other firms reached by BIDs to further City objectives, and any City representations made to voters, the media, and other interested members of the public regarding any BID or other redevelopment agency that might have anything to do with HUD Office of Inspector General investigations into block grant irregularities as mentioned in Kessler's initial lawsuit filing. In other words, the only limit is that there ain't no stinking limits.— June 1, 2010 11:49 a.m.
The Restoration of Faith or Something Like It
RE climbing Cowles Mountain: You know the purpose of changing perspective, and that is good. There is a reason to be prepared for a new heaven and a new earth. The path to becoming Buddha is one of taking steps like that, and I say that encouragingly as a confirmed and lapsed Catholic. The most beautiful thing I can imagine is the Tree of Life taking root from this solar system and slowly spreading throughout the galaxy as a natural extension of the Original Commandment to be fruitful and multiply. THE ONLY WAY TO GET THERE IS TO FIX US RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW, and we have already been shown the path to take to get there. As the Vulcan say, life long and prosper.— June 1, 2010 10:33 a.m.
Proposition D: How to Buy an Election
Ouch... somebody mentioned SEDC... probably a good thing that their 5-year plan ran into a roadblock, even if only temporary. The strong mayor elements of Prop. D would have been more palatable if the powers-that-be had split the question into two separate ballot issues. There's no way I'm voting to add another council seat. The developers ought to consider that a favor, as there would be less campaign contributions for them to make. Personally, I think we could get by with a city council of one, somebody to spin the wheel of fate...— May 29, 2010 6:41 p.m.
Bicyclist spits on windshield of car near Miracosta College
RE #4: I used to have to carry a Miranda card in DC, part of that riot-control gig the Old Guard used to handle while standing atop buses parked around the White House. Never had to use it. Never had my rights read out loud to me either, not in 50+ years. I was stopped for jaywalking near the Justice Complex on Broadway downtown once, decades ago. It was raining, and I was wearing a lightweight khaki-tan jacket that didn't have a liner. The street was fairly empty of cars when I stepped off the curb, but the officers that caught up to me almost ran me over by the time I had crossed the street. While waiting for my ticket, I stood there with my hands in my pockets until Junior told me to pull my hands out. As I did, I asked why, and he mentioned the possibility that I might be packing a weapon. On hearing that, I stood there with feet wide apart and my arms straight out left and right, palms facing him. He told me I could put my hands down, but I made like a statue, saying I didn't want to get shot by some rookie. Sarge, still sitting in the curbed cop car out of the rain while observing, started laughing his assets off... ---- On another occasion, I was approached by an officer while I was walking home extremely late after, interestingly enough, partying down with some of the OG just south of Streamview. I was heading east on Market just past Euclid, which was/is considered a rough no-man's land past midnight, and I'm pretty sure I was inebriated enough to be glad I wasn't driving. If I HAD a car, I probably would have been with the most interested of the fine young ladies I'd met at the par-tay... As the officer got out of his car and approached me, I made like a statue again, palms facing the officer. He asked what I was doing, and I said "If I were approaching a detainee, I would want to see his hands." After that, everything was cool, and once we talked a little about my Old Guard days, the officer gave me a ride to my house to get me past no-man's land. ---- I never challenge an officer who's doing her/his job. If that job involves me, I cooperate fully. So far, life has never put me in a position to question an officer's side of any story about me. I still have no bullet holes in me, even though I live in Encantostan. There's still a nice one in my neighbor's car door though... and nobody is happy about the girl who got killed by the rifle round that tumbled through the windshield.— May 29, 2010 6:30 p.m.
IKEA by Bus
"What's the point of wanting all these streets and freeways anyhow?" Here on Imperial Avenue heading out of Encantostan, it's premier low-budget drag racing. After all, they make skateboard parks for the kiddies...— May 29, 2010 5:32 p.m.
Guns 'n' Neighbors
Since one can obtain a WWII M1 rifle or M1 carbine from the Civilian Marksmanship Program as close as a high school in Carlsbad, there could be an element of market saturation there in Solana Beach, as far as M1 sales go. http://www.thecmp.org/ http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/clubInfo.cgi?clubI… Come to think of it, I can probably do the same from my old high school in Spring Valley... but then again, SV has always been that sort of wacky un-incorporated kind of place. We could only imagine what would happen if Pure Barre Studio II moved in next door to any Spring Valley Meth Mart...— May 29, 2010 5:21 p.m.
