San Diego big labor’s deceit on propositions K and L
Matt, Thanks for the explanation of how Shepard managed to avoid being jailed and put out of business after that Hoover/Hedgecock conspiracy went down. "Rogah" managed to beat the convictions on appeal, but his political career was over as soon as the verdict came in. (He still denies that he had any knowledge of what was going on.) As to this current fiasco, if that wasn't election tampering, I don't know what was. A massive violation of campaign finance laws, and not attributing the campaign signs and materials to the real source can swing elections. That's true especially here in SD county. So, they pay a measly $16K for all the abuses that were made, and it's all over. Hey, if that's all it costs to doctor an election, and in essence buy the result, it's a cheap price to pay. Very cheap.— August 12, 2017 11:11 a.m.
“The diesel death zone is a thousand feet”
That interchange was one of the most dragged-out productions in county history. It took over a decade to finally decide where to put the middle section of Hwy 56, then it took far too long to get it built. It was twenty years ago when that half-baked interchange was being constructed. Then as it was being finished most of us learned that 56 was only connected to/from I-5 south. Want to connect to or from the north? Get off the freeway and take some streets to make the transition. This development, along with the widening of I-5 through the area and farther north, will turn that corridor into an area unfit for human occupation.— August 11, 2017 5:33 p.m.
Nancy won’t leave
A truly sad situation. An elderly lady can't trust her own daughter, is apparently abused by the daughter to some degree, and lives in fear in her own home. What a joyless outcome (pun intended.) Whatever comes of the criminal case, the mother-daughter bond is badly frayed and/or broken for good. That Grace can't depend on her daughter for support in her old age is tragic.— August 11, 2017 5:17 p.m.
District Attorney yet to file charges against former Poway Schools chief
It finally made the U-T yesterday, Wed, August 9. No explanation of why it took so long, but don't expect anything like that from this or the previous DA. Stories like that one that appear in the U-T days after we see them elsewhere are a real indicator of how weak their local coverage is. I have to say that the paper should include a motto. It has none now, so it could say "Yesterday's news today." Now I know that's been suggested before, but it really is true now.— August 10, 2017 9:29 p.m.
Charge it to the Chargers
$42,500 is pocket change for the Spanos gang. Why their front organization took even that long to pay a bill is not obvious. But I must thank Matt for reminding me of that wretched rally and the endorsements by three local Congressmen, all of whom I now hold in even lower regard than ever before. Gee whiz guys, can't you ever let go of the notion that sports fans are the only people who vote?— August 9, 2017 6:36 p.m.
None
It is far from certain, but I assume that the congregation of that church is predominately older and very conservative, generally retirees. So why was this cool, "surfer dude" type of guy, with his casual attire and facial hair, hired by the congregation? There must have been a reason for it, and now that the woman youth pastor has filed suit, will the church board members take another look at their choice? They should.— August 9, 2017 11:52 a.m.
Jeffrey Barton gets maximum sentence yesterday, Aug. 8
I'll accept your appraisal of the judge and his efforts. The step of removing a juror during deliberations for this set of reasons is most unusual. Generally the judges want the jury to do its thing with a minimum of involvement of the judge. I base my opinion on the fact that whenever something like this occurs, the appeal courts have to give weight to the unusual circumstances. So, I still think Barton has a good chance of having those convictions overturned.— August 9, 2017 8:31 a.m.
Jeffrey Barton gets maximum sentence yesterday, Aug. 8
He says he'll appeal. How he can pay for an effective appeal is not clear. But methinks he has a strong basis for appeal, namely the dismissed juror. While the news reports had her refusing to deliberate with her mind made up when the cases went to the jury, and had her refusing to even explain her refusal to convict him, generally in a case of this high importance, a hold-out juror results in a mistrial. So, it would appear that this judge was convinced of Barton's guilt, and made sure that the verdict reflected that. There's an extremely high probability Barton will win his appeal. Then it will be up to our new DA to decide if she wants to try him a THIRD time on those counts, or to fold. ANA has been in the news too many times in recent years. The Johnnie Crean episode, where the school was being governed/misgoverned/managed for the gratification of an egotist was the worst until this came along. That school must get its collective act together and stop the scandals and abuse.— August 8, 2017 5:28 p.m.
Less foreign cafeteria food, pledges San Diego Unified
Is anyone out there aware of a US pineapple cannery anywhere? In recent years, even the "American" brands of canned pineapple are from somewhere else. Del Monte comes from the Philippines. There was a time when pineapple was canned in Hawaii, but many years ago I was told that ceased, and the pineapple grown there was consumed fresh, meaning most of it headed for the mainland. Not to undermine the point of the story, it just seems that selecting canned pineapple as the example was not a good example. I'd be more interested in knowing about imported meats or seafood. Who knows what they might have as contaminants.— August 7, 2017 3:24 p.m.
Do growlers count as open containers?
The solution seems simple to me. Just put it in the trunk of the car. If your car doesn't have a trunk, such as a pickup, put it as far out of reach as possible. A totally full growler with the cap tightly cinched down is about as "sealed" as you can get.— August 6, 2017 8:17 a.m.
