Supervisor embezzled to go to Super Bowl
These embezzlement cases seem to pop up every year. The companies seem to have weak financial controls and do not bother with external auditors. They trust their charges too much. But one thing they have in common seems to be an unusually healthy profit margin because the scammer can get away with draining millions before they are caught. It must be nice to have a business that can't keep track of millions of dollars. Most business people struggle to get by and stay independent. I imagine the culture of the company comes into play in these cases as well. They foster an environment where employees can cheat them and go undetected from some time. Years ago I ran a small chain of retail businesses and pilferage was a far worse problem than shoplifting. Employees are the biggest thieves. Screen once, save twice.— April 8, 2017 9:29 p.m.
OSH - another big box first for San Marcos
I think you're correct about their contractor business representing much more revenue than retail. They have a legacy with so many local builders, they extend credit, work within the construction loan apparatus. Home Depot only does retail financing and does not get to offer many lines because vendors don't want to have their products look cheap. I don't mind paying more at Dixeline because it's easier to shop and they give a senior citizen discount. The only thing I have found that HD does better is in the paint department.— April 8, 2017 8:29 p.m.
Mayoral whopper: "Hundreds of millions" will be lost if convention center not expanded

OSH - another big box first for San Marcos
Dixieline was sold to Lanoga Corp, in 2003, then Lanoga was acquired by ProBuild in 2008, then ProBuild was acquired by Builders FirstChoice of Dallas (Texas) in 2015. I have shopped there for years. They have better customer service than Home Depot by far. They are great for window, doors and remodeling projects. I guess the industry is consolidating to remain competitive against the Orange Monster.— April 8, 2017 5:58 p.m.
OSH - another big box first for San Marcos
Home Depot also drove Builder's Emporium, San Diego Glass & Paint, and Standard Brands out of business. Dixieline is no longer locally owned either.— April 8, 2017 1:49 p.m.
Drone flies low over Kensington and Channel 39 comes knocking
Property owners also own the airspace above their property. If a quad copter is hovering in my front or backyard, I will not hesitate to shoot it down with a pellet rifle, water hose or other defense. Once downed, I would remove its battery and then drive over it with my car.— April 7, 2017 11:46 a.m.
Ghost streetlights cost taxpayers, benefit SDG&E
All these frustrations can be traced back to pension funding.— April 7, 2017 10:46 a.m.
Six local accountants, firms disciplined
I used to have an accountant named Ballard Cheatham. He had to surrender his license many years ago due to disciplinary actions.— April 5, 2017 5:54 p.m.
Best fish and chips in the U.S.
I recommend a trip to Lemon Grove for Chef John's Fish & Chips. Light batter, not greasy and good sized servings for the money.— April 5, 2017 5:51 p.m.
La Jolla Shores neighbors propose gating new development, worry about drainage
If I were you Craig, and saw some wooden post with a paper sign reserving a public space in Balboa Park for Lynn Schenk, or any other 'retired' politician, I would have done the same thing and parked there. Those are public parking spaces and only the City can reserve them after pulling a permit for certain events. The permit number must be visible on the reserved space notice. I tend to lean Democratic, but I never liked Lynn Schenk. She always reeked of self-entitlement.— April 4, 2017 8:19 p.m.
