Padres brass tarnished
First of all, Don, thank you for bringing integrity to San Diego journalism, and "telling it like it is". The Padres have been "tarnished" for most of their existence...The Ray Kroc era being the exception. As a former season ticket holder I weathered the Tom Werner fire sale, the Petco Park bait and switch by John Moores, "build me a stadium and I'll spend my money on a roster to win championships"; yeah, right. I realized I'd been duped and gave up my seats. From afar I have witnessed the interesting sequence of events that surrounded the double sale of the team, first to some guy from Arizona which was subsequently voided by the "great" Bud Slig, then to the current ownership group, with John Moores making a killing. And look what we, the Padre fans (in my case former Padre fan) ended up with...An organization that's the laughing stock of MLB...Between the Chargers and the Padres what a cesspool professional sports in San Diego has been! Go Aztecs!— September 16, 2016 7:50 a.m.
San Diego U-T, brought to you by SDG&E
I totally agree with you, Alex. The 3 investor owned monopolies in California are running out of control. The California Public Utilities Commission is a joke, and the lobbyists keep the politicians pro-utility. I've been told that SDG&E is currently offering employees a handshake of an $100,000 Medical Credit Card in addition to the other bloated retirement benefits to entice retirement. Why not...the rate payers will pick up the tab. How can we put and end to this graft? There are more of us than them!— September 16, 2016 7:22 a.m.
Clairemont’s home day-care shuffle
First of all, I love kids (I'm a retired middle school teacher). Secondly, I realize that many families require that both parents work, and that quality daycare is a necessity. To me the issue in this case is whether the zoning is proper for this daycare. If the street is zoned R-1 (single family residence) the expectations of the homeowners on that street would be that noise, traffic, etc would be minimalized accordingly. A daycare center with 15 or more kids and parents coming and going all day clearly changes the ambience of the the neighborhood. If, in this case, the neighborhood is zoned for commercial usage or multiple units then the daycare will fit right in. From the article, it appears that the home in question was purchased with the intent of running a business out of it from the beginning. If such is the case, and the property is zoned as R-1, the daycare should be somewhere else. The fact that the city or the licensing agency does nothing doesn't surprise me. One of the first steps in a civilization's demise is the subtle appearance of anarchy due to the lack of enforcement of the laws in place to maintain civility. If this Clairemont situation is accurately depicted in the article it's just another crack in the wall.— September 15, 2016 8:55 a.m.
Builders sued for grading waste
Maryanne...How does one "Works at Journalist?" First, like most right leaning wingnuts your comments lack any science based facts. The Water Control Board uses actual science based studies to help prevent damage to our watershed systems by ignorant or self-serving citizens. Secondly, The City of Lemon Grove first contacted the Water Control Board in October of 2014 regarding the violations. "Despite dozens of city and water board inspectors, the project continued to not use industry-accepted methods to keep sediment out of the Encanto Channel. The developer clearly did ignore these mandates and now has been punished accordingly. If you can produce credentials qualifying you as an environmental engineer, hydrologist, or possessing any scientific background your OPINION may have some credibility. Otherwise, you are simply an uninformed troll who "Works at Journalist".— August 13, 2016 10:34 a.m.

SDG&E and the behesting tales of two Roberts
There needs to be a public takeover of the "big 4" stock holder owned utility companies; SDG&E (Sempra), Pacific Gas and Electric, Southern California Edison, and Southern California Gas Company (Sempra). Their relationships with the California Public Utilities Commission (just now being discovered) are obscene. Their internal management structure is a "good old boys" joke. Their fiscal model of employee salaries (including unbridled overtime compensation), benefits, and retirement perks out of line. Their managerial errors including, among others, the Edison/SDG&E San Onofre decacle, the PG&E Bay area pipeline explosion, and the recent Southern Gas Co leaks costing millions will be passed on to the rate payers while the stockholders, including many of their employees will continue to reap fat dividends and stock gains. That's why we are continually subjected to rates which are among the highest 3 in the nation. What a crock!— March 31, 2016 5:46 p.m.
Mission Beach vs. clever developer
I now live on Mt. Helix in La Mesa...In the '80s, when Belmont Park was turned over to the developers I resided on Island Ct in Mission Beach. A close friend of mine was the chairman of the Mission Beach town council. Any development at Belmont Park was supposed to be pre-approved by the Mission Beach Town Council before even submitting it to the San Diego City Council for approval. That never happened...The developers tried twice and were soundly rejected by the Mission Beach Town Council...The APPOINTED mayor at the time "backdoored" the proposal and the City Council passed the proposal. Turns out the developers were old buddies of the PREVIOUS (and disgraced) mayor. Against strong local opposition the project went ahead anyway before the locals could stop it...The results...Over 30 years of failing ventures on what has to be one of the most prime locations in all the city. Now the future development of the Mission Beach School property is being ramrodded down the locals throats in much the same fashion....There's no surprise at all...What a crock! Money talks...BS walks!— February 19, 2016 5:13 p.m.
No new Mission Beach lifeguard station
Thank you, Judge Bacal. The lifeguards have enough equipment and facilities. The money can be better spent elsewhere in the infrastructure repair budget.— December 27, 2015 7:28 a.m.
Year-long La Mesa Village renovation takes its toll
Have you ever dealt with the La Mesa Planning Dept? What a treat. Drive around La Mesa and check out some of their fine planning. Tour some of the side streets off La Mesa Blvd in "the Village". You'll find streets of cute single-family homes mixed in with hideous multiplex "shoe boxes"...What were the planners thinking? Take a drive up Lemon Avenue from "the Village". Notice the collection of hideous apartments dumped in the area....What were the planners thinking? Take a drive west of "the Village" along University Avenue. Check out the neighborhood between Park Street and Helix High School...What were the planners thinking? Revenue for the City! That's what the Planning Dept. is thinking! Disgusting.— October 15, 2015 7:25 a.m.
Shocking goings-on at Green Elementary School
Leonore...My comments were, in fact, very tongue in cheek. I agree with you completely on the importance of unions for many occupations including the teaching profession. As you clearly stated without union representation workers would be at the mercy of their heartless, bloodsucking corporate overlords; and teachers at the mercy of incompetent administrators and an uninformed public. I am very thankful to have enjoyed the negotiated benefits from my union.— October 1, 2015 7:19 a.m.
