What Trump said is flat out illegal...according to legal experts and unprecedented. The President cannot direct the AG to persecute/prosecute his enemies and opponents...Last person to try that was Nixon...whose Attorney General Mitchell went to Federal Prison to be followed by his boss Nixon...only Nixon was saved by a Pardon by Ford....Historians still debate whether Ford made a "deal" with Nixon for the Presidency..

Excellent piece! Propping up bad, failing banks was the worst thing we could have done. We should have taken our medicine eight years ago.

TommyB: I figure if a guy got his medical license in 1958, he has been practicing about 58 years. If you figure he began his medical career at about age 26, one would hesitate to have him as a surgeon today. Maybe giving these controlled substance prescriptions fit his abilities well. The worst that could happen to him would be losing his license.

On the other hand, his practice may have been doing well, and he just did this as a favor for a younger person in his office.

Of course, I should talk. I have been doing financial journalism for more than 50 years. Best, Don Bauder

Hi Tommy, organizations like Wildcoast, Surfrider, and many more, have been working to improve water quality in the border region. Fortunately, we are making progress (although slower than we would like to see).

Fortunately, as of now, there is ZERO reason to cancel the competition. However, if there is one good thing that comes out of this sensationalized article, it's greater awareness of the problem.

Now, let's go surf the border and enjoy what so many work to protect!

This President has been a complete disaster for the Republicans, and great for the rest of America. The Republicans have been wrong about EVERYTHING. Idiots who waste everyone's time and money and who think that millions of Americans getting healthcare is the greatest crime ever committed. Obama is a foreigner - WRONG. Obama is a Muslim - WRONG. Obama is incompetent - WRONG. Obama is a tyrant - WRONG. I am surprised you dimwits have not rushed up to Oregon to play fort with your brother white supremacists/armed trespasser/tax cheats.

I am a community college professor who welcomes students with special needs. It's public education, for and by taxpayers. The stupid, snarky jokes and uninformed pronouncements about this case are typical of people who don't realize that the historical norm of burying "problem" students is no longer acceptable. As to the "rigors of higher education," every class should be spiced up with unusual students to stir up dull normals and up-tight aspirationals, to say nothing of teachers on rails. Remember, the giant steps in civilization were made by outliers, by definition. Learn to appreciate "different." Instead of feeling sorry for punishing citizens for not being "ready" (whatever that means) look to them for contributions you could never imagine. It takes all kinds, and none of us has the right to exclude anyone.

Walter Mencken Nov. 30, 2016 @ 10:53 a.m.

Dear Mr. Withheld, You wrote, "Okay, [Mencken], if you’re so brave let’s see you insult a few Democrats." But you also accused me of insulting Lyndon Johnson, a Democrat. The story also mentioned Kennedy, another Democrat. And this line: "And if Trump had an ounce of sense, he would have put a cigar on the podium during the Clinton debates and left it at that" seems a pretty clear reference to "Slick Willy" — also a Democrat. Cheers, and thanks for reading.

The Trump Administration is ending the addition rehabilitation treatment that was available under ACA. Ironically, the opioid epidemic is largely in the rust belt regions that pushed Trump into the electoral college numbers he needed to win the "election."

The problem is not the amount of rent the problem is that wages have not kept pace with the cost of living in San Diego. San Diego employers have always relied on low wage workers who lived in low rent neighborhoods and TJ. What used to be affordable areas now cost more than most who work by the hour can afford. Most of the employers in the hotel, restaurant, retail industries rely on government programs to provide their employees with housing, food, medical, etc. San Diego will become more and more a two class society with the so called middle class becoming part of the working poor.
